VHS Fall Sports The 2008 Homecoming Court: Timothy Pillow, Caleb Rice, Amanda Slinger, Kahli Anderson, Gillian Cheney, Taylor Smith, and Byron Schorzman. By Scott Laird This fall season has been a mixed bag for Vernonia fall sports teams, with some great perfor- mances, some slow starts, teams turning their seasons around, and some disappointments. The Varsity football squad recovered from a slow start to go 3-2 in Lewis and Clark League play, and make the state playoffs. Head coach Todd Hicks and his staff got the Loggers turned around, playing tough defense and securing league wins over Clatskanie 20-0, Neahakanie 43-6 and a homecoming shutout of Riverdale 41-0, and suffered close losses to Warrenton 24-22 and Ranier 14-6 to close the season. The Loggers were scheduled to face Willamina, The Toppers score another touchdown away, in the first round of the state playoffs on Saturday November 8th at 1:00 PM. against Seaside. The Lady Loggers varsity volleyball team suffered through a difficult season. The team ended their season with a loss to the Neahkahnie Pirates. According to Coach Brook VanMe- ter, it was a season of close calls, with only a couple of the games ending in the win column for the Loggers. “I don’t know that we could have come any closer without actually winning as we did this year, said Coach Brook. “As their coach it was so hard to see a team so gifted not achieve what we all desired as a team.” VanMeter said she wants to build on the talent she currently has, and develop the young players that will be the future of the Logger vol- leyball program. Coach Williams was complimentary in comments about her team and their progress through the season. “I think that each player showed a great deal of improvement as the season progressed. Their last few games were very impressive. It was awesome to to see the skills they developed and how they worked as a team.” Williams noted the play of Ariel Rock, a sophomore, as the lead setter, sophomore Mickell Maller , “...amazing at the net, As soon as she realizes her full potential, look out!”, and junior Chelsea Patton, the JV Team Captain who lead the floor all through the season. “There were many improvements and discoveries throughout the season so I would like all the girls acknowledged for their hard work dedication and for keeping me entertained throughout the season,” said Williams. Cross Country Coach James Brookins sent one one runner, Timothy Pillow, to the state meet this year. Vernonia Cheerleaders perform a routine (left). The Vernonia Toppers 8th grade volleyball team under Coach Justin Ward had a rough first part of the season but finished strong at the tournament in Banks on October 25, go- ing undefeated and taking first place out of 8 teams. Good Job Toppers! Coach Etta congratulates his team on another win. The Toppers football pro- gram continues to excel under the direction of Coaches Alex Etta and Dan Titus, finishing 6-1, The Toppers contin- ued to develop as a team throughout the season with an impressive come from behind victory over Seaside, and ended the season with a 14-13 victory over Clatskanie, the first time the Toppers have beat Clatskanie in around ten years. The only blemish on an undefeated season was a 27-20 loss to Ranier. John Wolf. Etta also mentions 7th graders Bo Clark Jeremiah Hammers, Tim Jennings, Jared Whitton, and Ronnie Maldonado as big contributors to this years team.
