vernonia’s voice community july 2008 More Donated Quilts The Vernonia Lions Club recently spearheaded an effort to re-equip the Ver- nonia Canine Unit which suffered serious damage during the Flood of 2007 and had to be totaled. Vernonia Police Sergeant Michael Kay recently showed off the newly equipped vehicle, a 2000 Ford Expedition that was purchased from the Portland Police De- partment. Insurance covered the cost of the vehicle and the standard equipment for a patrol car, but there was a shortage of funds to equip it as a Canine unit. The Vernonia Lions raised funds and solicited donations from other area Lions Clubs and private individuals. They raised $2,500 in two weeks which was used to outfit the vehicle with a K-9 Platform that protects the dog from injuries and al- lows the vehicle to be more effectively and safely used for prisoner transports. The platform and equipment installation was designed by Officer Kay and features an air conditioning vent into the back of the unit, three exits for the canine, and a remov- able platform that could be used in other units in the future. “Without the Lion’s Club stepping up again and enhancing the safety of our K-9 Kruger, I don’t believe our program would be in the position it is in today,“ said Sergeant Kay in a prepared statement. “It is important that the Lions be recognized for their dedication.” Vernonia Dental ue rm are connected by a thouand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results. ~ Herman Melville ~ Lions Club Donations Get Canine Unit Back Together D W e cannot live for ourselves alone. The supply is limited to this recent donation. DM Elsie E. Taylor, 81, a resident of the Ver- nonia community, died Thursday afternoon, May 29, 2008 at her home. A Celebration of Elsie’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Vernonia Community Church, 957 State Avenue in Vernonia with Pastor Grant Williams, officiating. Private Interment will be held. Elsie Elnore Taylor was born May 10, 1927 in North Powder, Oregon, the daughter of Joseph A. “Weise” Nice and Mattie (Smith) Nice. She was raised and received her education on the North Powder community, having graduated from high school in 1945. She was united in marriage to Lyle L. Taylor on June 4, 1945 in Baker, Oregon. Following their marriage they lived in Baker until 1962 when they moved to Sherwood, later living in St. Paul for a time before returning to Sherwood. In 1978 they moved to Jewell where they made their home for eight years until moving to the Vernonia commu- nity in 1986. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, On April 8, 1999, after celebrating over fifty-three years of marriage. Elsie began her working career at the Woodburn Post Office and later for an Insur- ance Agency in Woodburn. She later worked in the Marketing Department at GAF in Tigard as an Administrative Assistant until she retired in 1989. She later owned and oper- ated “Pretty Gifts and Things” in Vernonia which was her dream come true. She was a member of the Vernonia Senior Center as well as several Rock Clubs. Among her interests, Elsie enjoyed rock hounding and jewelry making. She also made and sold Christmas wreaths for many years. Throughout her lifetime, Elsie always lived on a farm and had a great love for animals, especially cows, sheep, chickens and horses. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Nice. Elsie is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lloyd L. Taylor of Montana and Galen L. and Alicia Taylor of Forest Grove, Oregon; a sister, Virginia Henderson of North Powder, Oregon; three grandchildren, Christina Taylor of Forest Grove, Oregon; Brian Taylor and Jennifer Taylor both of Vancouver, Washington; two great-granddaughters, Amber Taylor and Ashley Taylor; numerous nieces and nephews; and her 4-H daughter, caregiver and friend, Kerri Constance and her husband, Wes, of Vernonia, Oregon. The family suggests that remembrances may be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 900 SE Oak St. #202, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123 or to the Vernonia Community Church and Senior Center, in her memory. The Tualatin Valley Quilt Guild generously donated an additional thirty-two quilts of many sizes to Vernonia flood survivors; they donated over sixty in December. With TVQG’s encouragement, two of the quilts will be raffled at First Friday events in July and August; half of the proceeds will go to Vernonia Cares Food Bank and the other half to the Vernonia Hands-On Art Summer Youth Music &Arts Camp. an In Memory... To serve one is to serve the whole. Currently seva is known as a practice of selfless service, finding its roots in Bhakti Yoga. On December 3, 2007 the town of Vernonia was devastated by flooding. The food bank was a total loss. Many stepped up and helped in the recovery process and the food bank reopened its doors the following week. Since then the monthly average of 12+ families assisted increased to 640, while families struggle to return to their homes. Recovery contin- ues but it has been a turbulent year and Vernonia Cares Food Bank is in need of your help. C onnect with members of the V ernonia community.
