vernonia’s voice in other words june 2008 On The Shelves Stargazer By Orissa and Kaytee Burghard By Esther Arce This month I am touting the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. If you were paying any attention last month you noticed the film crew filming in downtown “Forks”. While the movie comes out in December, I truly doubt that it can capture the beauty of the book. This skillfully written love story is set in a small rainy town where everyone knows the chief of police and his daughter. (Sound familiar?) A classic tale of lovers from opposite sides of the tracks (so to speak), Twilight touches on the feelings of inadequacy and the strange way that we never quite see ourselves the way others see us. It also includes its share of adventure and suspense. This book is sure to be enjoyed by any teenager and many an adult. Here’s what Kaytee Burghard, age 14 and a student at Vernonia Middle School, had to say for Stephanie Meyer’s novel Twilight: This is a book you simply must read! In my opinion the book Twilight is the best book ever! I have read it many times and still want to read it again. Isabella Swan moves to a small boring town in Washington called Forks. On her first day at school she notices something a bit out of place. There are five perfect looking people, so beautiful they should all be on TV, sitting together in the Cafete- ria. They are not eating and not talking, just starring into space. In Bella’s next class, she sits next to one named Edward Cullen. The instant he sees her, he just tightens up and glares at her. Why such strong hatred from someone who doesn’t even know her? Later, after he has saved her life, avoided her, and become a friend of sorts she finds out a very important fact: Edward Cullen is a Vampire. As he saves her more and more often (she is a trouble magnet) they fall in love. But how long can it last between a Vampire and a clumsy human girl? With the perils ahead, will it be love forever or will Edward just get too thirsty? In this suspenseful romance, anything is possible. I highly recommend Twilight to anyone who enjoys great love stories or who likes to read about vampires and other creatures. - Kaytee Burghard As a side note, the Library does have a copy of both New Moon and Eclipse. Mercury retrograde has the effect of destabilizing talks, stalling and/or ending contracts, and literally breaking down cars and communica- tion devices such as telephones and computers. Even the most reliable equipment can give you trouble or stop working all together. It’s also easier to lose valuable objects due to a lack of attention. This can be a difficult time to try to stay focused on anything that requires long periods of concentration. What might normally only take a few minutes might take a few hours. It’s not that you can’t get anything done, but the interruptions, welcomed or not, are many. Travel and social plans can change suddenly and in unexpected ways, and in some cases be canceled altogether. On the positive side, this is a great time for stepping back and reassessing, and finally, af- ter much deliberation, moving forward.with like-minded individuals. If anyone can come up with new and inventive ways of doing things, it’s you. Aries You’re a visionary with a need for action so let yourself be inspired by something new. It would be against your nature not to. Try to be patient with those who are not as quick to the draw as you are, es- pecially after the middle of the month. Every experienced pioneer knows that there are times of temporary retreat but they don’t let it stop them. Libra You’re a natural mediator and counselor; it’s something you were born to do. You can see both sides clearly now and may be called on to find a solution that is fair and balanced for all sides. Trust your in- stincts, even in the face of doubt. You may not be the most outspoken or ag- gressive, but with diplomacy and charm you can win just about anyone over. Taurus This time of destabilization followed by conservation can help stop your depen- dence on external influences for survival. You’ll be looking for a way out if you’re stuck in a situation for too long, and you’re not willing to sacrifice your free- dom for the sake of temporary comfort. Maybe it’s time to look for a new way to earn a living. Scorpio Your sign is well known for its connec- tion to birth, death and rebirth. Some- thing is coming back into your life and it can be inspiring and joyful. Just keep both feet on the ground and your head on your shoulders; you should be able to handle whatever comes your way and become involved for all the right rea- sons. Gemini Your mischievous nature is ready to make an appearance and have a good time. You’ll be in a talkative mood. Try not to annoy others by talking on end- lessly about nothing of particular interest to them. If you let the words flow natu- rally and instinctively you might find that what you have to say can help others into right thinking, and right action. Sagittarius Laughter, we’ve been told, is the best medicine and taking a light-hearted ap- proach to life will work wonders for you this month. Just try not to play the fool when the situation needs a more serious response. Your sharp, quick mind & wit will be challenged at times, but you’re more than capable of handling it well. Cancer It’s time to nurture your physical self and give your mind a break from all the chat- ter. Work will fall behind the desire for pleasurable experiences. Even if you’re not the creative type, you’ll find yourself drawn to art and beauty this month. Cook a dish that melts in your mouth, plant an herb and flower garden, or decorate your home with bright, bold colors. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as you enjoy yourself. Leo At times you may feel like the courageous lone wolf who has to stand up and fight for the right thing, whatever that may be. You were made to fully express yourself. Just try not to be so self-righteous in your righteousness; remember that it’s easier to catch flies with honey. But then again, what Leo wants the flies when they can have the honey all to themselves? Virgo This is a great time to lighten the load by cleaning house, mending whatever needs fixing, or giving away what you don’t use or want anymore. You’ll feel better with a clean, well-organized space. It’s not your fault that you’re always critiquing; it’s part of your nature. You can’t help but try to find a way to make things more efficient. Capricorn Your serious, responsible, goal-setting self can take a break for a while. It’s time to take a long vacation and let someone else worry for a change. The world won’t fall apart if you’re not in control for a while. You’ll find that the company of a good friend or friends is just what the doctor ordered. Aquarius Your rebelliousness is back in full- form after enduring conformity for a few weeks. No problem since your airy nature lets you bounce right back and move on to the next cause. This month will have plenty of time for socializing or coming together. Pisces You are due for an existential moment, and what better way to get there than through music? Go out and dance the morning/afternoon/night away. Listen to some great tunes and sing along as loud as you can. Or pick up an instru- ment you haven’t played in a while. You’ll find your spirit lifted and moved in a great way. For you it’s like taking your vitamins.
