This year’s workshop topics in- clude how to build anti-racist unions, recent campaigns to build power among the building trades, and a conversation with national AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Liz Schuler about gender justice. ■ When: July 27-29 5-7 p.m and July 31 9-11 a.m. ■ Where: Online via Zoom. The tournament raises money for the Local 48 sick fund, which helps members who are in serious financial difficulty due to illness or injury, who’ve been off work at least 30 days and aren’t getting financial as- sistance from other sources. This tournament is open to IBEW Local 48 members as well as to nonmembers, includ- ing family, pensioners, contrac- tors, vendors and sponsors. It’s not necessary to sign up an entire team. You can register as an individual or indicate a preferred group (in the "Group Members" field below). Due to COVID-19 there won’t be a registration table or gathering at the end of the tour- nament. The event raises fund for nonprofit Guide Dogs of America (GDA). Founded in 1948, GDA pro- vides guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired peo- ple in the United States and Canada. Tournament format is a best ball scramble, with four-person teams, and there’s space avail- able for 144 players (36 four- somes.) The Tournament will be followed by a complimentary luncheon, raffle and awards presentation. Prizes will be awarded for K-P’s, Long Drives and a Putting Contest. ■ When: Sunday, Aug. 29. He served as one of six trustees—three from the union and three from the National Electrical Contractors Associa- tion—from 1969 until 1992. In 1970, during the Trust’s second year, he was appointed business representative for Lo- cal 48, a position he filled for 16 years until his retirement in 1987. Joy also was active in poli- tics, and helped set up a Local 48 Political Action Committee that supported union-backed candidates and encouraged members of the union to run for public offices and raised campaign funds for them. Joy was inducted into the Labor Hall of Fame in Decem- ber 2006. The award was se- lected by the retirees group of the Northwest Oregon Labor Council, which has since dis- banded. Joy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hilda; two daugh- ters, Sandra and Kathleen; a son, Timothy; and five grand- children. At his request, no service is planned.
