Carnahan March 23 1953 - Nov. 11, 2019 Mike Carnahan, a longtime member of IBEW Local 48, died Nov. 11 fol- lowing a lengthy battle with amy- otrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 66. Carnahan joined Local 48 as an apprentice in January 2000. He was active in the union, and served on the board of directors of the IBEW and United Workers Federal Credit Union starting in 2011. He was the elected treasurer of the credit union at the time of his death. M ICHAEL H. C ARNAHAN was born March 23, 1953, in San Luis Obispo, California, and moved as a young boy with his family to Salem, Ore- gon, where he attended school and graduated from McNary High School. Garry Paul Goodwin Jan. 17, 1931 - Nov. 18, 2019 Garry Goodwin, a longtime member, officer, and training coordintor for the Carpenters Union, passed away Nov. 18 at age 87. Goodwin was director of in- struction for the Oregon-Washing- ton Carpenters-Employers Ap- prenticeship & Training Trust from 1986 to October 1993, when he retired at age 62. Prior to that he served as the elected president of Local 1020 and later of its successor, Local 247. He was an elected busi- ness representative and later executive secretary-treasurer of the Portland District Coun- cil of Carpenters, which he served until its merger into the now defunct Oregon State Dis- trict Council of Carpenters. G ARRY P AUL G OODWIN was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Oakland, California. After graduating from Alameda High School, he attended the University of Berkley in Cali- He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years as a medic stateside during the Vietnam War at March Air Force Base (now known as March Air Reserve Base) in Riverside County, California. After leaving the service he moved to Corvallis and stud- ied at Oregon State University. In 1980, he moved to Battle Ground, Washington, where he owned a small construction contracting company. He married his wife of 24 years, Cindy Gibson, in 1995. At age 47, he entered the NECA-IBEW apprenticeship program. He retired in 2013 when he was diagnosed with ALS. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, a brother Kris, and nephew Tyler, who live in Alaska At his request, no service will be held. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn English, in 1952. Following his military dis- charge in 1954, he entered the Carpenters apprenticeship pro- gram in Martinez, California. In 1967 he moved his wife and four children to Portland, where he joined Local 1020. His father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and two un- cles were all Carpenters. His father, Bernie, was a financial secretary and business agent for Local 1020. Goodwin is survived by a son; two daughters; seven grandchildren, and soon to be 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter; and sister. Goodwin was buried Dec. 5 with full military honors at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. There will be a Celebration of Life Jan. 18, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Courtyard Fountains Retirement, 1545 SE 223rd Ave., Gresham.
