It is – as it has always been, and I am sure always will be – to better the standards of life for all who work for wages and to seek decency and justice and dignity for all Americans.” --- George Meaney Letter Carriers food drive brings in 75.7 million pounds The National Association of Let- ter Carriers (NALC) reported collecting 75.7 million pounds of food in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive May 11. It’s the largest one-day food drive in the nation. In the Portland metro area, NALC Branch 82 collected 465,845 pounds, and Branch 1104 in Clark County, Washing- ton, brought in 122,405 pounds. “Hunger affects tens of mil- lions of people around the coun- try, including millions of chil- dren, senior citizens and veterans,” said NALC President Fredric Rolando. “Letter Carriers see these struggles in the com- munities they serve, and believe that it is important to do what they can to help.” Nowhere was that more ap- parent than in the NALC branch that finished first: San Juan, Puerto Rico. Still struggling to recover from the 2017 Hurri- canes Maria and Irma, the cus- tomers of Branch 869 donated 2.375 million pounds of food. Los Angeles Branch 24 was second, and led all the biggest branches, with 2.076 million pounds of food. Central Florida Branch 1091 collected 2.001 million pounds of food and four other Florida branches, plus Oklahoma City, Garden Grove, Calif., Long Island, N.Y., and Pittsburgh collected more than a million pounds each. In Boise, Idaho, NALC Branch 331’s small carrier force of 200-349 members collected 478,484 pounds of food — sec- ond nationally among NALC lo- cals in that category. In our glorious fight for civil rights, we must guard against being fooled by false slogans, such as ‘right-to-work.’ It provides no ‘rights’ and no ‘work.’ Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective bargaining ... We demand this fraud be stopped. The labor move- ment was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress. M ARTIN L UTHER K ING , J R . Our labor unions are not narrow, self-seeking groups. They have raised wages, shortened hours, and pro- vided supplemental benefits.
