HAPPENINGS Stamp Out Hunger drive Portland-area letter carriers will “Stamp Out Hunger” as part of the 26th annual Na- tional Association of Letter Carriers food drive. Letter carriers deliver plastic bags to every household a few days before May 11. All you have to do is fill the bag with non- perishable food items, and leave it at your mailbox on the morning of May 11. Letter carriers collect the bags and deliver them to drop points, where volunteers sort the do- nations and forward them to the Oregon Food Bank. Living and dying on the factory floor David Ranney, author of a memoir about factory work in the 1970s, will speak at the Oregon AFSCME hall May 16. Living and Dying on the Factory Floor: From Outside In and the Inside Out tells Ranney’s story of giving up his job as a professor to work in factories of South Chicago. From 1976 to 1982 he works in a machine shop, a shorten- ing factory, a railroad car fac- tory, a structural steel shop, a box factory, a chemical plant, and a paper cup factory. Along the way he witnesses a wildcat strike, a failed effort to unionize, an immigration raid, workplace injuries, and a murder.
