PAGE 8 | February 1, 2019 | NORTHWEST LABOR PRESS BUILDING COMMUNITY WORKER SAFETY Training for a rescue at 50 feet A movie still signed by Jack Nicholson was one of 40 auction prizes at the 2019 SAG Awards watch party at the Lake Theater in Lake Oswego. This year’s watch party raised funds for Portland local SAG-AFTRA President Robert Blanche, who’s fighting for his life after a double lung transplant. Over 100 people attended, and raised $1,470, bringing the total raised to $9,000. Honoring union screen actors Backstage at the Keller Auditorium, IATSE Local 28 members Tom Bugas, Conrad Burmester, and Bill Ritchie got a hands-on demonstration of rope access gear Jan. 21. The three were among 40 Portland-area IATSE members who took part in four day-long fall protection classes offered by their union. IATSE members often spend time at great heights — hoisting gear at rock concerts or setting up and operating truss-mounted spot- lights. The union is working with film, theater and concert employers to improve members’ readiness to quickly rescue a coworker in the event of an accident. When IATSE members work at height, they’re protected by personal fall arrest systems that include a harness and a shock-ab- sorbing lanyard. But being suspended in the har- ness after a fall can itself be fatal if they’re not res- cued within 15 to 30 minutes. The fall protection classes were paid for by a grant from the IATSE International Training Fund. Classes were led by journeyman fall protection trainer Inger Brandal of Seattle’s IATSE Local 15, and were hosted by Portland IATSE Local 488 and IATSE Local 28 in partnership with the Western Washington The- atrical Training Trust. Unlike the better-known Oscars, the annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are for acting only, honor both film and TV, and in- clude awards for entire casts as well as individuals. Honorees are chosen by their fellow union mem- bers. Top honors at this year’s event, broadcast Jan. 27 on TNT, went to Glenn Close, Rami Malek, Sandra Oh, Jason Bateman, Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub, Patri- cia Arquette, and Darren Criss.
