The year was de- fined by the Seattle and Winnipeg General Strikes, the Centralia Mas- sacre, and a wave of state-spon- sored repression of immigrant workers during the Palmer Raids. The Pacific Northwest Labor His- tory Association will reflect on those events at its annual confer- ence in Portland May 3-5. The bikes were purchased by the ILWU Federal Credit Union, which runs a year-round fundraiser (tip jars at teller windows) and conducts various raffles at ILWU events. This year they raised $16,500. On Nov. 30, Brandon Michels (above right), John Albus (right), Doug White, Paul Nance, Matt White, and Daniel Bricker worked for several hours in a small space in the back of the credit union as- sembling the bikes, which ranged from 10” tall with train- ing wheels to full-size bikes for teens. The bikes will be gifts at the holiday party on Dec. 15. The labor-sponsored event is for families of unemployed union members and those facing temporary hardships.
