Operating Engineers Local 701 set up shop at the Boring Brewfest Aug. 24-26, bringing a mini-excavator and computerized tower crane simulator for patrons to play on as they enjoyed local brews, food, and music. Apprenticeship Training Director Lonnie Land (photo below), instructor Dave Sanders, and Field Reps Nate Stokes (photo below left) and Terry Casey spent the weekend at the festival talking about apprenticeship opportunities and jobs as operating engineers. “We heard about an opportunity to help raise money for a good cause, and to promote our training program at the same time. It was a no brainer,” said Local 701 Business Manager Jim Anderson, who attended on Saturday. The event was a fundraiser for The Kyla McCullough Gift Fund, a nonprofit organization that assists local children living with cancer while bringing awareness to the community about how to help others dealing with cancer. Kyla, 7, died of brain cancer in 2005; and for the Boring Oregon Foundation, a group of residents raising money to build a Multi-Generational Community Center in the area. (PAI) — Oregon native Jennifer Dorning, an associate member of the So- ciety for Pro- fessional En- gineering Employees in Aerospace, has been ap- pointed presi- dent of the national AFL-CIO’s Department Jennifer Dorning for Profes- sional Employees (DPE). She succeeded Paul Almedia, who retired. Dorning, who will serve the last three years of Almeida’s term, is the first woman to hold the DPE’s top post. She started Sept. 1. Dorning joined the Depart- ment in August 2010. Prior to her appointment she was the As- sistant to the President/Research Director. Before joining the DPE, Dorning worked for two years as an attorney in private practice representing clients in state civil commitment proceedings, as well as clients facing federal criminal prosecution. She graduated cum laude from Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington in 2008, and passed the Oregon bar exam that year. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Port- land State University in 2000 Dorning worked in the Ore- gon State Legislature as a leg- islative assistant for State Sen. Ginny Burdick from 2001 to 2005. Dorning is an associate mem- ber of the Society for Profes- sional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, International Fed- eration of Professional and Technical Engineers’ (IFPTE) biggest local and the one that represents Boeing engineers. She’s also a former member of The Newspaper Guild. DPE is a coalition of 24 na- tional unions representing more than four million professional, technical, and other highly skilled workers. DPE’s affiliates represent teachers, physicians, engineers, computer scientists, psychologists, nurses, university professors, actors, technicians, and others in more than 200 pro- fessional occupations.
