Why do unions and social justice matter to people of faith? Why should all workers defend unions from at- tack? What can faith leaders and faith communities do to help strengthen local labor and social justice movements? The Portland Jobs with Justice Faith-Labor Commit- tee will discuss those issues and more at a panel and discussion on why unions matter to people of faith on Tuesday, Aug. 22 , from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 2408 SE 16th Ave., Portland. Panel members include Rev- erend Linda Jaramillo of the United Church of Christ, Jani Turner, a member of Laborers Local 737, and Marty Hart-Landsberg, eco- nomics professor emeritus at Lewis & Clark College. Many religious traditions have strong roots in justice and the rights of working families to just living conditions. Historically, faith lead- ers and faith communities have played vital roles in important labor and social movements. The same is true today as leaders in diverse faith traditions organize and speak out against threats to immigrant and refugee communities. With national anti-union “right to work” legislation looming at the federal level, we have never needed to strengthen public understanding of and support for unions more than right now, said JwJ.
