NW Labor History Association puts out call for papers The Pacific Northwest Labor His- tory Association has put out a call for papers, workshops and presentations for its annul conference, to be held in Portland June 11-13, 2010. PNLHA is looking for proposals for papers, panels, workshops, and presentations related to the theme: “The Union Makes Us Strong: Inspi- ration, Guidance, and Hope During Hard Times.” Workers, families, and communi- ties throughout the Pacific Northwest have been seriously affected by the current economic crisis, the worst since the Great Depression, says Bob Bussel, director of the Labor Educa- tion and Research Center and a mem- ber of the PNHLA. But the region has been through economic downturns before and has been able to maintain its rich tradition of unionism, commu- nity organizing, and independent po- litical action. “In hard times we can draw on this history for inspiration, guidance, and hope in developing strategies that promote working-class needs and interests,” Bussel said. The deadline for proposals is Feb. 15, 2010. For more information, Bus- sel can be reached at 541-346-2784 or bussel@uoregon.edu. PAGE 7
