Stores closed, shipyards stilled, and streetcars stopped running. The contro- versial event, which made headlines around the world, was the first city- wide action in the U.S. to be pro- claimed a “general strike,” and heralded a era of labor unrest following World War I. On Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 5 p.m., union members, students, musi- cians, and others will come together at Seattle’s Labor Temple, 2800 1st Ave., to mark the 90th anniversary of the Seattle General Strike. Presentations and performances will revisit the event, followed by discussions of the strike’s legacy for today. In Portland, on Thursday, Feb. 5, KBOO Radio (90.7 FM) will feature music and present a history of the Seat- tle General Strike from 6 to 7 p.m. The 1919 strike began when work- ers in Seattle’s booming shipyards de- manded increased wages to compen- sate for the federal government’s freeze of raises during the war years. Over 100 local unions joined in sympathy. Union members banded together to provide essential services to Seattle’s residents. JANUARY 16, 2009
