(PAI) — Wal-Mart Watch, which the Service Employees International Union and other unions started several years ago to expose the anti-worker practices of the world’s largest retailer, formally merged into SEIU, Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director David Nassar said. “It has become clear that neither concern for its workers nor its own public image will persuade Wal-Mart to do right by its employees,” Nassar said. “In this economic climate and with Wal- Mart’s repeated intractabil- ity, workers of Wal-Mart need the choice and the chance to unite their voices and bargain for better wages, better benefits and fair working condi- tions.” Wal-Mart, with more than 1 million workers, is the nation’s largest private employer. SEIU will use Wal-Mart Watch’s data to lobby for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would give Wal-Mart’s workers a better shot at unionizing, Nassar said.
