Oregon AFL-CIO urges ‘Yes’ vote on Measures 49 and 50 Schneider to run for Gresham Council Dick Schneider, a retired senior aerospace coordinator for the Inter- national Assocation of Machinists, announced last week that he will be a candidate for a seat on Gresham’s City Council. Schneider, 62, retired in April after nearly 40 years with IAM Lodge 63, which represents workers at Boeing. The City of Gresham operates under a Council- Manager form of government where- by the six-person City Council (plus the mayor) is elected citywide by residents to be the legislative and policy-making body. The Council appoints a city manager to handle day-to-day operations. Three seats are up in 2008. Schneider has not declared which seat he will seek. The Oregon AFL-CIO is reminding all union families registered to vote to return their ballots before Election Day, Nov. 6. Ballots must be received in any county elections office by Nov. 6. Postmarks don’t count. Ballots also can be hand-deliv- ered to any county election office or any designated drop-site in the state. The Oregon AFL-CIO has endorsed statewide Measures 49 and 50. BM 49 modifies a land-use measure passed by voters in 2004 by clarifying the right to build homes on property, limiting large development and protecting farms, forests and groundwater. Measure 50 amends the Oregon Constitution by dedicating to- bacco tax funds to provide health care for children through the state’s Healthy Kids Program. “It’s more important than the presidential election this week, and that’s why our members are working to get-out-the-vote,” said Oregon AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlain. “Passing Measure 49 will help save Oregon jobs, like those of Long- shore workers who rely on farmland to make our top grain exports. And passing Measure 50 will help lower health care costs, which keep hurting us at the bar- gaining table. Oregon’s working families need every ‘Yes’vote we can get on both of these important measures. Then we’ll gear up for 2008.” SEIU locals endorse John Edwards Service Employees International Union Locals 503 and Local 49 have en- dorsed presidential candidate John Edwards, citing his strong health care plan and support for workers’ rights. The union includes 50,000 Oregon health care workers, property services workers, care providers and public employees. They joined SEIU members from Washington, Idaho, California, Montana, Iowa, Michigan, West Virginia, Ohio and Minnesota to endorse Edwards. Collec- tively, the SEIU locals in the 10 states represent more than 920,000 working fam- ilies. Oregon SEIU members reviewed presidential candidates’ positions and heard directly from candidates seeking the SEIU endorsement at a member-political conference in Washington, D.C., in September. The international union did not make a primary election endorsement.
