Labor law confab slated Jan. 19 at IBEW in Portland More than 200 people are regis- tered to attend the 11th annual Oregon Labor Law Conference Friday, Jan. 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the NECA-IBEW Local 48 Electrical Training Center, 15937 NE Airport Way, Portland. The conference is sponsored by the Oregon AFL-CIO, Electrical Workers Local 48 and the Columbia-Pacific Building Trades Council and is de- signed for business managers, busi- ness agents, organizers and union offi- cers to get the latest information to avoid legal liability and to better serve members, said conference coordinator Norman Malbin, general counsel for Local 48. This year’s conference will feature a panel on the Kentucky River deci- sion by the National Labor Relations Board. On that panel will be Richard Ahearn, regional director of the NLRB in Seattle. Ahearn was the re- gional director in Ohio who ruled ini- tially that nurses are employees and not supervisors. That ruling was ap- pealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and remanded back to the NLRB, which earlier this year ruled that nurses can be supervisors. Other courses offered will include corporate campaigns, union record- keeping, the Employment Relations Board, Fair Labor Standards Act class actions and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Oregon Labor Commissioner Dan Gardner will speak at lunch. For more information about the conference or to register, call Donna Marshall at 503-889-3660 or e-mail her at Donna@IBEW48.com. Trudy, Debbie, Marva, Holly, Mary Jane, Kirt, Lynn and Nancy Steelworkers strike Goodyear Local members of the United Steelworkers (USW) rallied with supporters outside of tire dealerships in at least 15 cities Dec. 2, including Portland. About 15,000 USW members have been on strike since Oct. 5 at 15 North American Goodyear factories. USW said members were essentially forced out on strike because of company demands to cut health care, close factories and import tires from China and other low-wage countries. With the company using replacement workers to make tires, USW is trying to raise public concern about the safety of the tires. The union is pointing to the 2000 recall of 14.4 million Firestone tires in the Ford Explorer. Those tires, manufactured by striker replacements, were linked to 271 fatalities and over 800 injuries, the union said. K ramers/metro mailing service 3201 N.W.
