Issue 6 Model United Nations finishes State with two awards A lison F ieldhouse The Model United Nations team was one of 46 high schools that competed in the State competition at University of Oregon from April 8-10. Out of 36 awards, the team brought home two, one for Best Speaker and one for Best Consensus Builder. Ann Bernert, junior, won Best Consensus Builder in the environment committee and Mitchell Rivet, senior, won Best Speaker in the economic committee. The best consensus builder is considered the delegate who did the best job in building cooperation between all of the delegates to draft a resolution to be passed. They developed agreement in the committee. The best speaker is the delegate who defended th e ir c o u n t r y 's p o s i t i o n th e best on specific issues in their specific committee. "Winning best speaker is the best thing that will ever happen to me. While there was certainly a lot of battle during the committee meetings, the real battle was in the karaoke room where I emerged unscathed," Rivet said. The group represented two different countries, Brazil and Sierra Leone. The team competed at the event which was held on the University of Oregon campus, April 8-10. Forty-six schools attended the event. Brazil were Haley Rivet, sophomore, Alison Fieldhouse, Amanda Wagner, Jennifer Sitton, juniors, Anik Shrestha, Avilash Cramer, Daniel Lee, Emily Fischer, Jaimie Lorenzini, Neelou Etesami, and Rachel Heisterkamp, seniors. Many other students earned awards, including scholarships such as the Dean's Scholarship to Lewis & Clark College for all first place winners. Additionally, Sabrina Levy, junior, won a scholar ship to the University of Oregon. James Siderius, sophomore, received two smaller money rewards for his project. L exi W elp & M ary W ood After seven years as a blood drive coordinator and 32 years teaching in the West Linn-Wilsonville District, Julie McLeod, health and PE teacher, finishes her career with record-breaking results from the March blood drive. Students donated 142 units of blood, only the second time in history that over 140 units have been collected. This number ties that of the October 2008 drive and is enough to save 426 lives. Julie M cLeod, blood drive coordinator and H ealth & PE teacher, presides over her last blood drive, in which enough blood was collected to save 426 lives. M cLeod has taught in the district for 32 years, and will be retiring at the end of this year. During retirem ent, she hopes to travel, take up ballroom dancing, and become more involved with volunteer work. has been such an honor and joy to run the blood drive twice a year here at West Linn," McLeod said. Next year, Mandy Weaver, health and PE teacher, will be taking over the blood drive. "Mrs. McLeod has spent a lot of energy making the blood drive successful and making it a great experience for everyone," Madison Harju, junior and blood drive volunteer, said. McLeod has taught at WLHS for nine years, with a focus in health and physical education classes like Healthful Living, Wellness and Anatomy and Physiology, but she's also carried that focus to other parts of the district. "I've taught at all levels across the district," McLeod said. She has held teaching positions at several different schools such as Sunset Primary, Athey Creek Middle School and Wilsonville High School. McLeod___________________ continued on page 6
