Eight teachers, one counselor join staff

A freshman counselor and
teachers in five departments
have joined the staff. They are:
Subject(s): English 9 & 12
This year students can
expect: "Lots of classroom
discussion, creative and
challenging assignments,
and an emphasis on reading
and writing."
Hobbies: Playing with her
son, hiking, reading, doing
sudoku puzzles, and going
to horse races.
As a child she: "Wanted to
be a horsewoman, gymnast,
or a ballerina." In high
school, she decided she
wanted to be a teacher.
Kathleen Terner
Subject(s): Geometry,
Algebra I & II
This year her students can
expect: "Clear expectations,
and lots of help."
Hobbies: hiking, camping,
shopping on Craigslist and
reading murder mysteries
As a child she: "Always
wanted to help people."
I like the relationship to be
more collegial."
Hobbies: "My free time is
spent almost entirely with
my family."
As a child: "I always knew
that I wanted to be a Band
Director. Kinda nerdy, but
it's the truth."
This year students can
expect: "Open ears."
Hobbies: biking, traveling,
cooking and surfing.
As a child she: "Wanted to
be either an architect or a
teacher."

This year his students can
expect: "A good amount
of reading, a significant
amount of writing, and
they'll need to be prepared
to discuss their opinion."
Hobbies: basketball,
reading history books and
boxing.
As a child he wanted:
"To be a spy for the CIA."

and spending time with the
family.

Students and staff find alternative transportation

Gas costs these days
have been described as
horrendous, painful and
depressing. Although prices
have been slowly dropping
(at least temporarily), the
average American is still
stretching dollars. People
are still struggling to pay
for "low" prices like, $3.63
and $3.59. Road trips, family
vacations and even trips
downtown have been limited
or put on hold because of
high prices. But there are
some alternatives such as
biking, walking, carpooling
and riding the bus.
"I have been riding my
bike for years; it is my way of
transportation and exercise.
My main intention was not
because of the gas prices,
but now that it has become
a huge problem it makes me
only been trying to get in his
daily exercise but, he is also
trying to bike the equivalent

teachers, they use alternative transportation to commute to work.

teacher, said. Davies has not
of the distance from Portland
to New York City. Last year
he recorded 2,200 miles.
Other than biking, people
are taking more drastic
measures, such as packing up
and moving, just to make the
commute a little easier.
"I think part of the gas
problem is the way we (U.S.
society) have set up our
infrastructures. In the U.S. we
have satellite communities
that promote a work
commute. I, myself, have
made the decision to locate
my home closer to work so I
can walk. I combat high gas
prices by only driving to the
grocery store and walking to
work," Geoffrey Bingham,
geology teacher, said.
"I walk to school. It's not
sexy, but it saves gas," Jon
Isensee, biology teacher, said.
