12 Sports October Special Editkgg>. Volleyball team wins Three Rivers conference m oYDNEY hONGQ _____. Staff Reporter The Varsity Volleyball Team members have all the fire that they had as State Champions last year. Currently ranked second in state and undefeated in Three Rivers League play, the team has lost only four matches so far this season, all of which came against Oregon's other top ranked teams, Jesuit and Central Catholic, in non-league play. At the West Linn tournament, the team had its best performance yet. After beating Crook County, last year's 5A State champions, they went on to play Central Catholic in the semifinals. A very emotional three set match resulted in the Lions’ victory. "We played really well. All of us followed the game plan and worked together. It was great to see what we have been practicing pay off," Danielle Sargant, senior. "One of our goals this year is to play well enough to be in the position to have the opportunity to play in the championships,” Carl Neuburger, head coach, said. Other key players on the team are Kellie Kawasaki and Alyssa O'Neil, senior captains, who will both be playing division one volleyball, at University of Oregon and Oregon State University, respectively. "I'd like to make it back to the finals, but we are going to have to work really hard and beat a lot of good teams," Kawasaki said. Since most of the team played together during last year's school season, as well as for the Portland Volleyball Club, the work ethic and chemistry of this team is apparent in the intensity of the games and their scores. With hardly any juniors in the program, the team will be composed of mainly sophomores and freshmen next season. "Next year's team is going to be really young," Neuburger said. Next year we can expect the team to be raw and inexperienced in comparison to this year's team. "It's going to be a different kind of experience." The first round of the playoffs started with a match against North Medford, the number four team from the Southwest Conference, on Oct. 29 at home. If the Lions won that game (results were not available as of press time), they would move on to the second round to be played tomorrow. The girls played Oregon City on Oct. 14 needing a win to put them in a good position for playoffs. They were ahead in the first 20 minutes of the game 1-0, and then Oregon City scored with two free kicks winning, 1-2. With the Oregon City loss, chances were slim to none for the team's goal of making it to playoffs. "Even without the result we wanted, we all played really well. We've bonded more than ever and have made so many memories in the past couple of months," Alison Vogt, senior co-captain, said about the Oregon City game. Even with the upset against Oregon City the girls held their heads up against Lake Oswego. The final result was a 1-1 tie. "If we keep positive, play intense, and play to our talent, we can beat any team," Vogt said. The girls beat Putnam 1-0 on Senior Night. Seniors include: Taylor Brooke, .... Photo by Zack Mueller Boys' Varsity Soccer Team battles to third, playoffs _ C arly H alverson _________ Staff Reporter The Boy 's team has been on a roll recently beating Clackamas twice, 1-0 and 2-0, and tying Oregon City, 1-1. In the game they played against Lake Oswego, the boys lost 0-2. However, there was much improvement from the last time they played Lake Oswego, losing 0-8. The boys’ team was in a close battle with Putnam and Clackamas for the number three spot in the league. The Hire** fpams were so close in the rankings it was hard to tell who would end up in that third place spot. Putnam failed to reach its goal in the second half losing to the Lions, 1-0. Mitchell Monihan, junior forward, scored the winning goal with a diving header in the second half securing third place in the TRL. "We needed the win against Putnam to put us into third and give us our first home playoff game since 2004," Monihan said. "It was a team effort and we couldn't of done it without Coach (Greg) Bean’s confidence in our playing capabilities." Girls soccer was dealt a major upset during its home game against Clackamas, losing 0-3. During the game, Haelee Staskiewicz, senior co-captain, bruised and sprained her knee, and .will sit out the rest of the season. If the Lions can beat Lakeridge and Putnam, two of the teams at the bottom of the TRL, they will head into the playoffs as the second ranked team in the TRL and will face the third ranked team from the Mt. Hood League, which could be David Douglas, Barlow or Gresham. To secure second place, the Lions had to beat a very good Clackamas team. The team triumphed and won a great game by a score of 21-16. Trailing by three points heading into the fourth quarter, the team ran for two touchdowns, one each from Josh Oltman and Jake Hysell, seniors, to put away the game. By the end of the game, they had more rushing yards than passing yards for the first time this season and showed a significant improvement in the running game according to Ron Chappell, head coach. In the game against Lake Oswego, the team had a tough time stopping the top ranked Lakers, giving up 41 points and only scoring one touchdown in a blowout loss, to the number one ranked team.
