Expectations for season: Both teams wantto make State, and finish in the top 10. Practice schedule: six days a week, hour and a half each. Renegades to join with rivais in effort to play college teams G alley L athrop Staff Reporter The West Linn Rucking Renegades RugbyTeam took Nationals by storm last May, winning the Plate Division and earning a ranking of eighth in the nation. A normal season begins in January, but normal is a word these players don't live by. Tryouts were held for a select team on Sept. 22. Their opponents? Local college teams including Western ^ jeg o n State University and U p v ersity of Oregon. Rugby is a sport that has yet to make its way onto front pages, but lack of press does not mean lack of talent. The Renegades have taken State for the last four years and generated impressive scores. At the end of the 2005 State Championship, West Linn whopped their opponents 98-0. In the 2007 season, the Renegades went undefeated. The season commenced with a domination at Nationals when the Renegades took home the Plate. There will be more than just West Linn girls on the team. The Under-19 Rep. Squad will also include players from Clackamas, Canby and Portland. "These are great people and great players. It will be very interesting to see what happens when we all come together. I think we have a lot of potential," Kylie Rogers, senior, said. Some are expected to make a big impact on the team, including Audrey Jones (LO graduate of 2007), who recently played with the best Under-19 squad in the country, the USA Eagles. She is the first player from Oregon to earn a spot on the prestigious team. Other players to watch out for are Cassie Jones (Clackamas graduate of 2007), who is captain of the Clackamas High team. Rachel Summers will also be a driving force. She was a captain of the 2007 Canby team, who also dominated at Nationals, taking ninth. "It will be great to have so much diversity in the players and what team they come from. I think having this All-Star team will overall strengthen Oregon rugby," Ernesto Espinoza, Head Coach, said. There will be many challenges for the team, the biggest one being they are playing experienced college teams that have played longer, and may be bigger, stronger and faster than their high-school counterparts. The "Rep Squad," as they are now being known , is expected to put up a tough fight. On Sept. 29, the "Rep-side," as they are now known as, beat Reed College in a 47-0 shutout. Their next game will be against Western Oregon University on Oct. 9.
