For the purposes of discussion I will refer to audio content as Podcasts and video content as Vidcasts, but be aware that depending on the provider or creator of the content, they may use a different name but are in fact describing the same type of content. In te rn e t m edia has been around since the conception of the internet, but in recent years, because of advancements in m any d iffe re n t areas, it has become more feasible for m a in s tre a m c o n s u m p tio n by consum ers. Products like Apple's iPod and iTunes have helped immensely in bringing Podcasts to the mainstream. Many people would describe a podcast like a portable radio show, and some of them are, bu t that is a d escrip tion of only one use of podcasting technology. Any audio content from le c tu re s to m u sic to comedy can be distributed in podcast form. Many new companies have sprung up on the internet that provide quality content, my favorites being Revision3 and TWiT.tv. T W iT .tv p ro v id e s b o th podcasts and vidcasts, but has recently started referring to them as netcasts. The TWiT. tv Netcast Network all started with one show, "this WEEK in TECH" or TWiT. The hosts first met working for the now defunct TechTV n etw o rk . T he TW iT p an el changes w eekly but regular hosts include: Leo Laporte, John C. Dvorak, Patrick Norton and Will Harris. Many other former TechTV hosts/employees join the panel for any given week. Most hosts worked on or hosted at some point the semi-popular television show "The Screen Savers." Now they have round table discussions about current events in technology. With the success of TWiT, V . Revision3 is like any other TV network, except on the web, creating and producing its own original content. Whether he’s listening for his own enjoyment, working out, or using it in his classroom lessons, music always seems to be involved in whatever he is doing. But Frick doesn't just enjoy listening to music, he also creates his own. Track five of his playlist "that was just something I put together in ’Garageband," Frick said of his own song "Run Forrest Run." "I listen to it while jogging; it's very up tempo and gets the blood flowing. But the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it and it has actually become one of my favorite songs." Which brings me to the recent Apple a n n o u n ce m e n t, a p ro d u ct to be released Q1 2007 that will stream all of your iTunes media from your computer to your television. This is big for people doing vidcasts; it means breaking into the mass market that d oesn 't w ant to w atch television on their computers. So, this n e w model is something that many consu m ers might prefer. It would enable complete control of all entertainment content, no more waiting for primetime for your favorite show to come on, or worrying about whether or not your favorite shows will share a time slot. People want to control their content, at least, I know I do.
