August 18-23. An “Eclipse Weekend Used Book
Sale” will be hosted by Baker County Commu-
nity Literacy Coalition at the Baker County Public
Library. Proceeds for this fundraiser will go toward
supporting reading programs in partnership with
local schools. Hours: Fri, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sat-Sun,

HUNTINGTON PIONEER DAYS
August 18-21. A celebration of the pioneer and
Native American heritage that shaped this corner of
North East Oregon including Native American danc-
ers, Pioneer living history performers, live music,
children’s activities, community BBQ, and more in
downtown Huntington.
ELKHORN CREST ULTRA MARATHON
August 19. The Elkhorn Crest 50 is a 52 mile trail
run that will take you along the Elkhorn Mountain
ridge line across sub-alpine forests and grasslands.
The trail offers panoramic views of Baker Valley, the
Wallowas, and the Blue Mountains. The race has an
average elevation of over 7200 ft., making it a one-

PANFISH TOURNAMENT
The 15th Annual Panfish Tournament will be held
Sunday, August 20 at 5:30 a.m. at Hewlett Park in
Richland.
MUSIC IN THE MEADOW
August 20. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Great family fun
in the historic ghost town of Sumpter. This one day
family friendly music festival located in downtown
Sumpter, includes musical performances by numer-
ous regional musicians and bands, kids games and
family activities throughout the day. Gates open at
11 a.m. Sunday with children’s games and activities.
Cost is $5 per person per day, children 7 and under

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
August 21, The Great American Total Solar Eclipse
will darken skies from Oregon to South Carolina,
along a stretch of land about 70 miles wide.
DURKEE STEAK FEED
August 26, from 4:30 p.m. to about 8:00 p.m., the
Durkee Steak Feed will be held at the Quail Ridge
Golf Course in Baker City surrounded by classic
cars from the Show -n- Shine. For easy parking,
leave your vehicle at the parking lot of the Christian
Church down the hill on Hwy. 7, and take the Baker
City Trolley for free up to the event. Enjoy certified
Angus beef ribeye steak, famous cowboy pan break
slathered in butter, fresh cut veggies and corn on the
cob, a baked potato and dessert for just $20. Kids can
enjoy a hotdog dinner with all the trimmings for just
$5. Tickets are available at the gate, at the Chamber
of Commerce, at the golf course. To top it all off, lo-
cal musician Frank Carlson will lend his talent to the
event. Don’t miss it!

on June 25, 1939 in Marys-

Whittacker. Vi married the
love of her life, Mike Hill
in Washington State on
October 31, 1990.
Vi and Mike enjoyed
hunting, fishing and mush-
rooming. She especially
enjoyed the Spring and the
color lavender.
She was preceded in
death by her parents.

passed away

Fay’s request, no services
have been planned.
On June 8, 1934, Ross
and Irma (Ray) Ray-
mond gave birth to Fay
in Woodburn, Oregon.
At a very young age Fay
moved to Grant County
and she graduated from
Prairie City High School in
1952. She married Gordon
Bruce Paustian on May
28, 1960 in Winnemucca,
Nevada and together they
raised five children; Carrol,
David, Tamara, Gary, and
Almetta.
Fay’s main occupation
was being a homemaker,
but she also worked for
Kolb & Oster, Pioneer
Federal Bank, Ben’s Trans-
fer, Baker School District
and the County Assessor’s
Office. She retired from
Baker School District. Fay
enjoyed crocheting, knit-
ting, sewing, gardening,
bowling, square dancing
and spending time with
her children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
While in school she played
volleyball and was in
band, Fay also volunteered
at Baker Co-op for the
past several years. She
did many great things in
her life but the accom-
plishment she was most
appreciated for was being
a devoted wife, mother,
grandmother and great-
grandmother.

and son-in-law Bob Titus
of Prairie City, Oregon;
her son David Paustian of
Baker City, Oregon; her

She is also survived by 11

She was born to Clyde
and Leonora Ward on July
6, 1931 in Baker, Oregon.
Charlotte attended schools
in Baker and graduated
from Baker High School
in 1949 and went on
to attend Oregon State
College(University) gradu-
ating in 1953 in the School
of Pharmacy.
As a young adult she was
a member of the Oregon
Trail Riders Drill Team,
riding her pinto horse
“Vivo” in the local rodeos.
