10 — THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2017 Local Kiddies parade a hit! Samantha O’Conner / The Baker County Press Grand Marshall winner Cash Fraser, 3. BY SAMANTHA O’CONNER Samantha@TheBakerCountyPress.com Monday, July 3rd, Baker City Events, a non-profi t volunteer organization founded in 2014, held the annual Kiddies Parade. This year’s theme was “United We Stand … In Love of Country.” “The Kiddie Parade has been going on for many, many years,” explained Lynette Perry, the Event Planner and Treasurer for Baker City Events. Perry said, “It used to be VFW organized it and then it got to the point where they decided to just disband. I was working at The Baker City Herald at the time and I talked to my boss and I told him ‘We can’t let this go away, how about the newspaper sponsoring it?’ I was the event planner there before I retired, as well as an ad sales person. And, so, we took it on and then, now with newspapers having to be so shorthanded just to stay alive, they don’t do event planning any more and I retired in March.” Perry, Deanna Davis the Secretary for Baker City Events, and President Monica Bailey judged the winners for the different categories. The Grand Marshall win- ner was Cash Fraser, who also won 1st place in the fl oats category. Moms of Preschoolers (MOPs) won fi rst place in the Groups and Organiza- tions category. MOPs is an international group that was brought to Baker City fi ve years ago by Deidra Richards, according to Krista Cook, the coordina- tor for MOPs in Baker. Kelly McCarty won 2nd place in the Floats category and Jennifer Aldrich won 3rd. Wyatt Carey won 1st place in the Wheels catego- ry and Cooper Christensen won 2nd. Abel Bain won 1st place in the Stroller category. In the Individuals cat- egory, Kate Loenning won 1st place, Jill Finney won 2nd, and Lexi Rupel won 3rd. After the parade, the children were able to participate in games hosted by the Baker Elks Lodge #338 at the Geiser-Pollman Park . They held different races for children of ages four to 12—sprinting, hop- ping, sack races, and three legged races. All children who partici- pated were given ribbons and fi rst, second, and third place winners in each age group were given cash prizes of $3 for fi rst, $2 for second, and $1 for third. The children were sepa- rated into age groups four to six, seven to nine, and 10 to 12. Friends of Baker County Library BOOK SALE!
