CHALK IT UP TO ART
Saturday, July 23. Baker Art Guild is once again
sponsoring Chalk It Up To Art, a fun, family friend-
ly event that recognizes the artistic talent in our
community. Local artists or interested participants
will donate their time and talent to create chalk
drawings on the sidewalks of downtown Baker City.
The event takes place Saturday, July 23th, with
participants beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continu-
ing throughout the day. Residents and visitors are
invited to view the work, both in progress and
fi nished, while shopping, dining, or strolling along
Main Street. Any and all creative and interested
people (any age) are invited to participate! Busi-
nesses are invited to sponsor sidewalk squares for
chalk drawings at $5 a square to help support Baker

ADLER HOUSE EVENT
Join us at the Leo Adler House on July 30th at
1:30 p.m. “Kate Adams is back to read her poetry
from “In His Own House,” based on Leo Adler’s
story as told in “The Spark and the Light.” Light re-
freshments served on the lawn. Free with your Adler
House admission. Adler House is open Fridays &
Saturdays 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
NORTH POWDER HUCKLEBERRY
FESTIVAL SHOW N SHINE
Saturday, July 30. Registration 8 to 9 a.m.; $15
entry fee. Prizes in numerous categories. Shaded
seating! This car show takes place in conjunction
with the North Powder Huckleberry Festival.

COMMUNITY NIGHT OUT
Tuesday, August 2, 5:30-9 p.m. This annual event
provides an opportunity for families to join together
for an evening of fun, food and entertainment at the
Geiser-Pollman Park. Free hamburger, pop, chips
and fruit. Live music, vendor booths, prizes. Con-

MEDICARE CLASS
Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Baker
County Public Library will host a free class about
Medicare. The two-hour course is provided by
expert advisors from the state offi ce of Senior
Health Insurance Benefi ts Assistance, also known
as SHIBA. Topics covered will include: - What is
Medicare? - Do I need both A&B? - Other insurance
options - Prescription drug coverage - Secondary
insurance - Financial assistance - Fraud protection -
Marketplace plans. In previous years, sessions have

SUMPTER VALLEY RAILROAD
STARLIGHT EXPRESS
Saturday, August 13, 2016. As darkness falls,
passengers are treated to a twilight trip up valley
for a complimentary cake and coffee dessert at the
Sumpter station. The return trip under the light of
the stars features the added bonus of the apex of the
Perseid Meteor showers, one of the most spectacu-
lar events on the annual cosmic calendar. The train
will arrive back at the McEwen depot shortly after

potluck and his wife Janice
will be cooking up all of
Jack’s favorite foods.
Jack Robert Clark was
born on May 22, 1946
in Corvallis, Oregon to
Robert and Jean (McNutt)
Clark. Jack was raised in
Eastern Washington until
the age of 16, when they
moved to Port Angeles,
Washington. Following
high school Jack enlisted
in the U.S. Navy and
served in Vietnam 1964-
1966.
On March 27, 1969, Jack
married Janice Burgess in
Port Angeles, Washington.
They had three children.
Jack enjoyed salt water
fi shing in Washington
waters, razor clam digging,
sports and hunting. His
favorite color was red and
he loved spring, which in-
cluded daffodils and roses.
He was preceded in
death by his parents,
daughter Cathryn Virgillo,
granddaughter Tiahna
Marie Messersmith.
Jack is survived by his
wife Janice; daughters Ja-
nine and her husband Troy
Romero of Port Angeles,
Washington; son Richard
Clark of Olympia, Wash-
ington; 12 grandchildren;
6 great grandchildren (and
one on the way) sister Jan-
ice Christie of Bellingham,
Washington; Chihuahua’s
Happy and Caesar and his
cat Cleopatra.
Jack will be missed by
all who knew and loved
him, and for now, we know
in our hearts, that he’s
“gone fi shing.”

He spent his youth on the
north fork of the Clearwa-
ter River out of Orofi no,
Idaho.
After serving in the
Marine Corp. he moved
to Baker City, Oregon
where he met and married
his wife Leslie. Jim was
an avid outdoorsman. He
loved hunting, fi shing and
being in the mountains.
He will be missed by all.
Jim is survived by his
wife Leslie, sons; Jeff
(Carey) of Earling, Iowa,
Justin (Amy) of Magnolia,
Delaware, and Jimmy of
Missouri. He is also sur-
vived by his brothers; Bill
(Carley) of Kamiah, Idaho,
Brady (Pam) of Orofi no,
Idaho, Rockie of Orofi no,
Idaho, Ricky (Vicki) of
Orofi no, Idaho. Jim also
leaves behind seven grand-
children.
He was preceded in
death by his father James
M. Jones, mother Delo-
ris (Dodi) Jones and one
infant brother Micky Lee

Pat was born on July
25, 1929 in Cheyenne,
Wyoming to Paul Richard
Peterson and Marguerite
Clarey Peterson. Her
paternal grandparents were
pioneer homesteaders in
the Cody, Wyoming area.
Pat attended public
schools in Wyoming and
Nebraska, graduating from
Greybull High School in
Wyoming in 1947. She
then graduated from Cot-
tey Junior College in Ne-
vada, Missouri in 1949 and
then from the University of
Colorado, with a bachelor
degree in nursing in 1953.
Pat married Robert E.
Reed at Billings, Montana
on September 1, 1953.
They lived in Burlington,
Vermont while he served
in the Air Force, Syracuse,
New York while Robert
studied for a degree in
Forestry, and in Oakridge
and Corvallis, Oregon as
he pursued a career with
the United States Forest
Service. Pat worked as a
nurse at each of the loca-
tions they moved to. Mr.
Robert Reed tragically
died in an automobile ac-
cident in 1968.
Pat married William C.
“Bill” Fessel Jr. in Cor-
vallis, Oregon on August
2, 1969. They lived in
Corvallis, Oregon, Boring,
Oregon, and Redmond,
Washington before moving
to Baker County, Oregon
in 1983.
She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church,
serving as a Deacon. Pat
was a 65 + year member of
the PEO Sisterhood and in
Baker County, she was a
member of Chapter AX.
