FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2016 THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS — 9 Local BHS announces awards at Memorial Day honors night this week CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 He continued, “Please do not let this day pass without telling our children and our grandchildren what it means to us, and how important it is for them to remember. Let us always as a nation, and as a free people, be grateful, for the sacrifice that was made. May God bless our na- tion, and our men and women, and keep them safe, until they bring them home again to us. Amen.” Henshaw thanked Harvey, and the Dedication of Flags ceremony commenced, with Henshaw reading names of those honored, followed by the raising of a flag for each one individually, including: James Lee (Jim) York; Charles Palmer McKim, M.D.; and Duane Buckmaster. Taps was played following the raising of the last flag, by two trumpeters. Coates delivered the closing prayer, and Avenue of Flags Chairman Doug Riggs spoke to the crowd next, thanking the various volunteers who helped place the flags last Saturday morning, including two Scout troops, and a Cub Scout troop. He introduced American Legion Auxiliary Unit #41 President Dani Huck, who was pres- ent, and he said she spent two years compiling informa- tion for a book titled The Avenue of Flags, which includes history, and all of the names on the flags flown that day, plus a few that weren’t flown (the only time she could get the names off the flags is when they’re flying, he said). He thanked her for her effort, he invited everyone to a VFW Post #3048-hosted spaghetti dinner at 4 p.m. that day, and he said that volunteers were needed to remove the flags, at 5 p.m. Henshaw thanked the crowd, and also invited everyone to attend the spaghetti dinner. Start time for the 10K is 8:30 a.m. and for the 5K is 9 a.m. The Center will be open at 7:45 a.m. for same-day registra- tion. The race course is challenging, with a 340 foot eleva- tion change.
