Bennett CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 While Robert worked for Georgia Pacifi c in Eugene as a plywood plant supervisor in 1983, he and Jean had learned that Lester passed away, and, since Jean was in line to inherit the property, Robert had to make a decision—to stay in Eugene or to move to eastern Oregon. “It’s a decision we didn’t regret at any time...” Robert said. The Pondosa Store still remains in operation, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., fi ve days a week, Robert said, and it’s well-stocked now. Inventory includes pop, candy, ice cream, and staple items (no cigarettes, or liquor, he said). He said he’s currently looking for someone to take over man- agement of the store. Robert participated in his fi rst “Honor Flight” last week from Portland, to, among other sites, the National World War II Memorial, in Washington, D.C. He made the fl ight with 19 other veterans, from different branches of service (he said he was the only marine). “We had a great time, visiting all the memorials in Washington, D.C. This is something I’ve fi nally accomplished,” he said. Honor Flight is a non-profi t organization, dedicated to providing veterans with honor, and closure, according to the Honor Flight Network. Its mission: to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service, and sacrifi ces of themselves, and their friends. “I was the only World War II veteran (of the group of 20) that didn’t need a wheelchair,” Robert said, jokingly. He visited the sites with his grand- daughter, Lindsay Wil- liams, and he met and shook hands with Oregon’s Representative Greg Walden at the World War II Memorial, which he said is a “fantastic place.” Robert said Walden presented each veteran with a fl ag, an Honor Flag, which had fl own over the Capitol building, in Washington, D.C. This included cer- tifi cation of that fact, and each veteran was named and entered into the Con- gressional Record. “It was really spec- tacular, precision work,” Robert said, of the special presentation the Marine Corps drill team made, while he was visiting the Marine Corps War Memo- rial, which depicts the rais- ing of the American fl ag on Iwo Jima. Upon his return to the Portland airport, Robert said, the warm reception was amazing, the event fi lmed, and his interview broadcast by a local TV station. “It was a great experience for me...I felt gratifi ed,” Robert said. Gratitude is humbly ex- tended from this reporter and veteran, to Sergeant Robert Bennett, members of the Greatest Gen- eration, and others, whose sacrifi ces allowed us the freedom in which to live our modern life.
