WORDS AS SCULPTURE EVENT Friday, March 25, at the Baker County Library artists SK Cothren and Nancy Coffelt will be hold- ing the workshops “Words as Sculpture.” Bring your friends and spend a fun Spring Break after- noon creating a temporary art sculpture! Be like artists Andy Goldsworthy and Christo, who create site-specifi c temporary public sculptures. Build a sculpture using library materials, fi lm it and share it with the public. 1 p.m. till 2:30 with Nancy Coffelt for kids ages 5-12. 2:30 till 4 p.m. with SK Cothren for ages 13 to Adults. Cost is free to the public. SOROPTIMISTS MAD HATTER TEA PARTY Wednesday, March 30, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sunridge Restaurant, Baker City. A no-host social and dinner are planned. Meet the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter, and enjoy an evening of Alice in Wonderland-inspired activities. Wear a hat, come in costume and bring your teapot or tea cup to participate in an optional tea cup exchange. In the classic children’s book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice encounters a tea party hosted by a nonsensical and irritable hat maker. Convinced that time is stuck at 6 p.m., the Hatter presides over a never-ending tea party, but plans are to conclude by 7:30 ‘ish. Voter’s choice awards will be given for the “maddest hat and costume,” and the “voter’s best tea pot and tea cup.” Reservations required. RSVP by March 25 to 541-519-4484. Silvan was born on April 25, 1933 in Harrisville, West Virginia. In his youth, he lived in West Virginia, then moved to Seattle, Washington, then to North Powder where he gradu- ated from Powder Valley High School. After gradu- ation he attended Baker Business College in Baker City. Silvan was inducted into the Army on February 25, 1953 and received an Honorable Discharge on March 30, 1961. In 1957 in Weiser, Idaho Silvan married Joyce Vande Vanter, they had two daughters, Vicki and Janice. The couple later divorced in 1984. He worked at the Service Station in North Powder while in high school. He then owned Baker Mill & Grain & Haines Steak House. He then worked for Major’s Sports Center in Ridgefi eld, Washington before returning to Baker. Silvan belonged to many organizations. He was a long time member of Baker Elks, Past President Of Baker County Chamber Of Commerce, Past Director and Long Time Member Of The Oregon Feed, Seed & Suppliers Association, and Past Director And Long Time Member Of Haines Stampede. In 1987, he was Grand for the Haines Stampede. Silvan shared in this or- der, what he enjoyed most during his life - they were Family, Work, Socializing, Gambling & Girls. Donna Jean Haigh Baker City, 1951-2016 Donna Jean Haigh, 64, died on March 7, 2016 at her home in Donna Baker City, Haigh Oregon. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. (Date and time to be announced.) “Those who can see God’s hand in their life can safely put their life in God’s hands.” ~ Abe Pfeifer ~ Donna was born on September 1, 1951 in WaKeeny, Kansas. She attended kindergarten at Garfi eld School in Cokev- ille, Wyoming and fi nished high school in Baker City in 1969. She has lived in Wyoming, Idaho, Washing- ton, and Oregon. Donna worked in a fi sh packing plant as well as apple orchards in Wash- ington. Donna considered Durkee and Baker City to be her home. Donna also loved the Oregon Coast. She enjoyed country mu- sic, dogs, horses, bike rid- ing, cigarettes and drinking coffee. At one time she had a horse named Misti and two dogs: Lady and Smokey. Donna had four sons: Steven, William, Randy, and Mike. They were all adopted by other fami- lies. For many years she dreamed of reuniting with all four of her children at the same time. This dream came true in the Summer of 2012. Her favorite season was summer. Donna was al- ways thankful for the little things in life. She didn’t even complain through the injury and illness that she endured for over fi ve years. Her favorite color was blue; like her eyes. Her favorite fl ower was the daisy. Donna was preceded in death by her parents John Haigh and Ruth Gardner Haigh. She is survived by her four sons Steven, William, Randy and Mike; fi ve grandchildren, two older brothers Ed Haigh and Dennis Haigh, longtime caregiver Anita Handyside, and her dog, Caramel. Ines Maria Cedeno Van Cleave Baker City, 1925-2016 Our mom, Ines Maria Cedeno Van Cleave, was welcomed into heaven March 10, 2016. Ines She passed Van Cleave away in Me- ridian, Idaho. Her graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Ceme- tery in Baker City Monday, March 21 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Jesse Whitford of The Baker City Christian Church offi ciating. Ines was born April 20, 1925 in La Madera Prov- ince, Panama City, Panama to Amelio and Natividad Bernal Cedeno. She mar- ried James Van Cleave in Panama in 1945 where James was serving in the military. When he got out of the service, the couple moved back to James’ home town of Hereford, OR where they raised their family. Ines always enjoyed berry picking, camping, going for rides in the country and fi shing. She always seemed to be the one to catch the biggest fi sh! After retirement Ines and James enjoyed spending the winters in Yuma, Arizona and their return trips to visit family in Panama. SEE OBITUARIES PAGE 11
