Leland Johnson Formerly of Richland, 1934-2016 Leland Johnson died at his residence in Gardnerv- ille, Nevada on January Leland 27, 2016. Johnson A Funeral Service will be held on Friday Febru- ary 5, 2016 ~ 1:00 p.m. at the Pine Valley Presby- terian Church in Halfway Oregon. Interment at Pine Haven Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the fam- ily for a reception to be held immediately follow- ing the service at the VFW Hall in Halfway. Leland LeRoy was born June 22, 1934 in New Bridge, Oregon to Belle and Lorval Johnson. Le- land was raised in Robi- nette Oregon where he also attended grade school. He graduated from Eagle Valley High School in Richland Oregon in 1952. While in High School, Leland met Shirley Blank. They were married in 1953 in Richland Oregon and di- vorced 1957. Leland then met Dixie Larimer at the Brownlee Dam, they fell in love and were married in 1958, had one son Leland “Lee,” divorcing in 1991. In 1995 at Newport Beach California, Leland met and married Helen “Joan” Dunn. He and Joan were together until her death. Leland’s work started as a Fruit rancher in Robi- nette, Oregon; a logging Contractor and rancher in Vanderhoof British Co- lumbia; then for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company on Brownlee and Oxbow Dams and on the Union Valley Dam in Northern California. From 1967- 1975 Leland worked for Terra Labs Engineering. By 1975 Leland started his own company HJH Western Contractors doing excavation and structural concrete. Leland enjoyed operating and doing me- chanics on heavy equip- ment. He retired in 2006. Leland’s work led him to live in many places including Vanderhoof B.C. Canada, to Los Angeles, Newport Beach California and most recently Gard- nerville, Nevada. One of Leland’s most memorable times during his life was going deer hunting with his Dad when he was only eight years old. Especially because he had his very own gun to hunt with. Leland was preceded in death by his parents Belle and Lorval Johnson, Sister Barbra Dennis, and wife Helen “Joan” Dunn Johnson. Leland is survived by his son Leland Johnson Jr. of Gardnerville, Nevada, Granddaughter Alyssa Maria Johnson of Santa Ana, California; nephew Blake Dennis and wife Kellie; niece Nancy Denig and husband Joe all of Halfway; numerous nieces and nephews. Nina Stevens Baker City, 1924-2016 Nina Stevens, 91, longtime Baker City resident, died at her home on Monday, Nina January 18, Stevens 2016. A private family celebration of Nina’s life will be held at a later date. Nina was born on Octo- ber 19, 1924 in Meadow, Utah to William and Sarah Labrum. She was the youngest of six children. On May 15, 1947 she married Edwin “Ed” Stevens. They made their first home in Holden, Utah where they raised horses and cattle. It was in Utah where daughter Eris was born. Then in 1964 the fam- ily moved to Moses Lake, Washington where Ed went to work with his cousin’s cattle operation. Years later, in 1977, the family then moved to Bak- er City when Ed accepted a job as a herdsman for Harrell Hereford Ranch. During most all of Nina’s life she was a housewife, mother, grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years Ed and all of her siblings. Nina is survived by her daughter Eris and her hus- band Ray Merritt of Baker City; grandsons Justin Merritt and wife Candice of Baker City, Robert and Haylee Merritt of Baker City, great-grandchildren McKinley and Macken- zie numerous nieces and nephews. Eugene Kenneth DeShaw Baker City, 1921-2016 Eugene Kenneth De- Shaw, 95, of Baker City passed away at his residence Jan. 26, 2016. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Eugene was born in Minot, North Dakota on January 23, 1921 to Phil- lip DeShaw and Jennie (Pritchett) DeShaw. He joined the Marine Corp. and served his country during World War II as a Sergeant. On May 21, 1953 he married Mildred Brackin. Eugene en- joyed bowl- ing, playing pool, Eugene hunting, DeShaw fishing, and camping when he had free time and he was a member of the Elks, the Eagles, the VFW, and the American Legion. He is survived by his daughter Rayetta Clark of Oakridge, OR, son Gary DeShaw of Baker City, OR and daughter Debra De- Shaw of Baker City, OR. He is also survived by his four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Eugene is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred DeShaw. The Littles’ crossword puzzle Robert Allen Casteel Baker City, 1937-2016 Robert (Bob) Allen Casteel, 78, of Baker City died January 26, 2016 at his residence. Bob A private Casteel graveside service will be held in the spring. Bob was born on Septem- ber 23, 1937 in Denver, CO, to Leonard C. Casteel and Laura Bliss. After finishing high school, Bob joined the United States Navy and served for four years. On Aril 15, 1972 Bob married Cora Elizabeth Ireland in Nevada. Bob worked at one time for Valley Metal in Califor- nia as a semi-truck driver. Over the years, Bob fell in love with Baker City and eventually relocated to the area with his family. He was well liked by everyone he met and he was always there if you needed him. Bob loved being around his family and his grand- children. He also had a passion for fishing and hunting in his spare time. He is survived by son Danny Casteel of Colorado Springs, son James Shelton of Baker City, daughter Debbie Casteel of Colo- rado Springs, daughter Rochelle Stoakes of Baker City, son Dennis Shelton of Baker city, daughter Trudy Casteel of Colorado Springs, daughter Robin Llamas of California, daughter Robin Casteel of Colorado Springs, and daughter Mickie Sharp of La Grande. Bob is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Bob is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, three brothers; Ervin, Dwayne and Buddy Casteel, and two sisters; Mary Bollinger and Frances Casteel.
