COMMUNITY / PARENT INPUT NIGHT Monday, December 7 at the South Baker School Library at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, December 9 at the Baker High School Commons. Parents and Com- munity members are invited to participate in Baker School District 5J Community/Parent Input Nights. Each district leader has organized a meeting to elicit input on two basic questions: 1) what areas/programs do you see having success and 2) what areas/pro- grams would you like to see with additional focus. This is the beginning steps in developing priorities for the district which will be reflected in the district budget. Please join us at the time and place listed for each building. Disor- derly Conduct I. — Obituaries — Merton Dale Taylor La Grande, 1928 - 2015 Merton Dale Taylor, age 87, died peacefully at home with family and friends Merton at his side Taylor on Thurs- day, November 19, 2015. A Graveside Service with Military Honors was held on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 ~ 2:00 p.m. at the Island City Cemetery in La Grande. Friends were invited to join the family for a recep- tion to be held immediately following the interment (approximately 3 p.m.) at the Fort Union Grange Hall 63161 Gekeler Lane, La Grande. Mert was an accom- plished pie baker and at his request pie and coffee will be served. Please bring your favorite pie if you wish to share. Mert was born October 5, 1928 in La Grande to George and Laura Hamann Taylor. He grew up on a farm on the Cove highway attending a countryside one-room school and then graduating in 1946 from La Grande High School. In 1950 he graduated from Oregon State Uni- versity with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Drafted for the Korean War, he served in the US Army from 1951-1953 at Fort Bliss Texas and the White Sands test range as a member of the 2nd Guided Missile Group working with the first US intercontinental ballistic missiles and captured Ger- man rockets. He married Carol Joyce Peeples of Baker City in 1956. In 1957 the new- lyweds moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Northrop and Douglas Aircraft. Joyce worked as a teacher and they enjoyed showing Afghan Hounds in their spare time. Return- ing to Island City in 1960, he farmed for the next 25 years. Mert enjoyed his family, Borzoi dogs, cooking, col- lecting antiques, hunting, motor homing and any- thing mechanical. A long time admirer of antique clocks, he opened his clock repair shop in La Grande in 1987 and continued until last year. Merton is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Taylor of La Grande, daughter Lynne Smith and husband Doug of Sher- wood, Oregon, son Dave Taylor and wife Laurann of Boise, Idaho, son-in-law Jonathan Williams of El Dorado Hills, California, brother Richard Taylor and wife Phyllis of La Grande and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Nicole Williams of El Dorado Hills, California, parents George and Laura Taylor and brother Beryl Taylor. His family would like to extend their heartfelt grati- tude to the Dialysis Center team, Heart ’n Home Hospice, many caregivers, medical professionals and dear friends whose won- derful care allowed Mert to remain home during his final days. Charles Herbert Chandler Baker City, 1919 - 2015 Charles Herbert Chan- dler, 96, a life long resident of Baker Val- Charles ley died Chandler November 18, 2015 at Settler’s Park in Baker City. A visitation will be held at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel Friday, Nov. 27 from 2 to 6 p.m. His graveside service will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11:00 am with his friend Pastor Chuck Buchanan from the Durkee Community Church officiating. Friends are invited to join the fam- ily for a reception at the Baker National Guard Armory following the service. Charles was born Sept. 4, 1919 at the Chandler home on Valley and Clark Street in Baker City to Linda (Bodmer) and Her- bert Chandler. He married Maribeth Gragg in 1941 and they had two sons, George and Charlie. Charles raised prize purebred Hereford cattle, having bred national cham- pions and some of the fin- est animals to ever be led into the show ring. Charles and his father, Herbert, successfully showed cattle all over North America. He also judged many of the national shows. Charles loved horses and was a very accomplished horse- man using his skills daily on the Chandler Hereford Ranch. Charles was a past Presi- dent of the American Her- eford Association, Baker County Cattleman’s As- sociation, member of the Historical Society, Oregon Cattleman’s Association, and Life Member of the Baker Elks Lodge. There are too many other awards and honors to list, but the latest honor was the American Hereford Asso- ciation Hall of Fame given in October 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri. Charles loved the cattle and the ranch. He saw many changes from horse- drawn implements to computers and GPS guided equipment, being very forward thinking he started using computers back in the DOS operating system era and was self taught. He was an intelligent man and was the first of three gen- erations to graduate from Oregon State University. George and grandson Duane are also graduates. Charles loved his family dearly and would do any- thing for them. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up on the ranch as well as his great grand- children. He enjoyed fly fishing and camping in the Eagle Caps and loved Boulder Park Resort when it was in operation. Charles is survived by son, George Chandler and wife Janet grandson Duane Chandler, grand- daughters Patti Hall and husband Cliff, and Kelli Bullington and husband Rodney, great granddaugh- ters McKenzie and Morgan Hall, great grandson Tru- man Bullington, daughter- in-law Margaret “Meg” Moore, great granddaugh- ters Maddee and Lacey Moore. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Her- bert and Linda Chandler, wife Maribeth Chandler, sister Herberta Chandler, and son Charlie Chandler. Ann Dean Baker City, 1937 - 2015 Ann Dean, age 78, of Baker City, OR, formerly of California passed away in a local hospital on Mon- day, Nov. 16, 2015, after a lengthy illness. She is preceded in death by her parents; two broth- ers and two sisters. Sur- vived by four children, two sons of Michigan and two daughters of California, 10 grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers of Texas. Ann was born on Septem- ber 24, 1937, Oak Cliff, Dallas County, TX. She graduated from Quinlan High School in 1955, in Quinlan, TX. Ann continued her studies in various genres; medical, cosmetol- ogy, carpen- try, comput- er science, Ann natural Dean alternative- complementary medicines, graduating from Shasta Community College, in 2000, with a degree in Building Construction. Working as a factory seamstress, press person in her parents’ dry cleaning business. She worked alongside her husband as a cement mason. A military wife, as well as owning/operating her taxi business & Driver for her Mt. Shasta Ambulance Service. Capa- ble of doing most anything she set her mind to do. Possessing the greatest level of tenacity. A strongly principled woman, ‘right is right.’ Her faith in God was steadfast. As well as having the ability & tal- ent for all domestic type crafts. Ann enjoyed young people, helping others, gardening, a tender heart for the needy/misfortunate ones. Ann loved her family and friends and she will be greatly missed. Rita Tylka Baker City, 1938-2015 Rita Tylka, 77, of Baker City, died of heart disease on November 21 at St. Rita Alphonsus Tylka Medical Center in Boise. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, December 4, 2015 at 11:00 am in St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, Baker City, OR. Rever- end Robert Irwin of St. Jermoe’s Catholic Church, Jerome, ID will celebrate the Mass. A reception will follow the Mass in the Parish Hall of St. Francis. Rita was born in Chi- cago, IL on July 28, 1938 to Stephen & Bernice Baranowski. There, along with her younger brother Raymond, she grew to adulthood, thriving in their Polish-American neighbor- hood. When Rita was a high school freshman in 1952, she met the love of her life, Richard Tylka. They began dating as seniors in high school and married on June 21, 1958.
