Local western mystery author, Clair Button, will attend an exclusive book signing and reading event at the Wolf Creek Grange in North Powder from 2-4 p.m. Button, of Baker City, has written and published three novels to date. During the North Powder event he will read from those as well as discuss his new writing adventures. There will be time to meet and visit with Button after the reading. Admis- sion to the book signing is free and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the reading. EOU PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION Monday, October 12. Eastern Oregon Universi- ty President Tom Insko is visiting Baker County next week and community members will have an opportunity to meet him during an informal re- ception Monday, Oct. 12. PRISON PUBLIC TALK Wednesday, October 14. 5:30-7:30 p.m. Over the last three years, Blue Mountain Community College’s Small Business Development Center has been working with inmates who desire to start a business upon release from prison. In addi- tion to assistance with business plans we organize public forums at the prison. This year’s Prison PublicTalk dinner provides you an opportunity to visit the prison, listen to business presentations by inmates and to connect with officials and all who assist inmates in their future success. Union County Detainer. — Obituaries — Donald Huff Baker City, 1968-2015 Donald “Don” Huff, 47, died at his home in Baker City on September Don 30, 2015. A Huff Memorial Service will be held on Friday, 11:00 a.m. at the Harvest Christian Church 3720 Birch Street in Baker City. Friends are invited to stay for a reception immediately following the service at the church. Donald James “Don” Huff was born on July 20, 1968 in Bakersfield, Cali- fornia. The family moved to Yuba City, California in 1979. Don graduated from Lindhurst High School in 1986. He married Anna Priddy in June of 1986 in Yuba City, California. They had two sons and one daughter. Don’s Mom and Step- dad were school bus drivers. At the age of 18 years old he followed in their footsteps and began a long career in the school transportation Industry. He went from detailing busses during the summer as a kid, to becoming Director of Transportation in several school districts in Califor- nia. He always had a great love for kids and enjoyed his work on the school bus. Don also coached soccer for many years. Don enjoyed taking photos of scenery, family and wildlife. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting and fishing, even learn- ing to tie lures and loved to share them with others. Memorable times in Don’s life include the birth of his children. Other memorable times included: In 1991 there was a shooting at the High School and Don was the first bus on the scene to evacuate hundreds of students to safety. Another time Don’s courageous spirit jumped into actions was when there was a flood in Yuba County. Again Don was there on a bus to evacuate citizens to safety. Don was always ready and willing to help. In 2009 Don moved to Baker City. He helped his mother remodel and prepare her home for adult foster care. Don became a CNA and worked lovingly and closely with his resi- dents of the foster home. He developed lifelong friends of the residents and their families. He even “adopted” a grandma Crysta Chamberlin. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joe and Wilma Hickman, Roy and Mildred Huff, niece Britney Blount, sister Stephanie Neilson. Don is survived by his mother Kathy (Patterson) Hickman, Father Jim Huff, Step Father Steve and his wife Debbie Blount; Brother Michael and his wife Stephanie Blount, Sister Bonnie Huff Walt- man, Brother Melvin Huff, Sons Andrew and his wife Robin Huff, Adam and his wife Erica Huff, Daughter Katelynn Huff, six grand- children; Cameron, Hunter, Gracelynn, Aaliyah, Elijah, Aria; Favorite Niece Kylee and favorite Nephew Chris; Sisters Sherry and her husband Mark Tanis; Diane Blount; Aunt Carol and husband Vito De- Bartolo, Midge and Roy Mushrush; Cousins Tony DeBartolo, Cari Turner, Daniel DeBartolo, Hal Russie, and Greg Russie. Wanda Virginia Cole Baker City, 1940-2015 Wanda Virginia Cole, 75, of Baker City died Thursday, October 1st, Wanda 2015 at St. Cole Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. A celebration of her life will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16th at the Baker City Christian Church. Pastor Jesse Whit- ford will officiate. Wanda was born April 20th, 1940 in Elizabethton, Tennessee to Hunter and Sarah (Buckles) Berry. She attended and graduated from Unaka High School. On March 5th,1958 in Elizabethton she was mar- ried to Roy Cole. She was a member of the 7th-day Adventist church. Her hobbies included cooking, shopping and spending time with her family. She worked for 31 years as a checker for Safeway. She is survived by her husband Roy of Baker City. Two daughters; Tammy Runnels and Robin Mastrude both of Baker City. Also by two brothers and two sisters of Tennes- see and six grandchildren and two great grandchil- dren. She was preceded in death by her parents Sarah and Hunter Berry, a brother Clarence Berry and a granddaughter Melissa Cassidy. Michael John Phillip Hendriks Baker City, 1946-2015 Michael John Phillip Hendriks, 69, of Baker City died October 3rd, 2015 at his residence. A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13th at the New Hope Church in Baker City, with Pastor Joe Bush officiating. A recep- tion will follow. Michael was born August 20th, 1946 to John Albert Hendriks and Fern Holmquist in Amery, Wis- consin. After graduating high school, he spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Serving in Vietnam and reaching the rank of Captain. On September 23, 1967 he married Sofia Le- onor Higuera in Calexico, California. Michael and Sofia had four children. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and loved watching football. He was a mem- ber of the V.F.W., Moose Lodge, and the New Hope and Apostolic Lighthouse Churches in Baker City. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Patty Hendriks. Survivors include his wife Sofia Hendriks, a daughter Millie Trow- bridge of La Cresenta, CA. and three sons: Micheal P. Hendriks and wife Jennifer Martin- Hendriks of Baker City, Jimmy Hendriks of Baker City and Johnny Hendriks of Mexico. Also by five grandchildren. Shirley Elaine Taylor Cove, 1930-2015 Shirley Elaine Taylor, age 85, died Sunday, Sep- tember 20th at her home in Cove. A memorial service will be held on October 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Cove Sportsman’s Club. Ar- rangements are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebra- tion Center. Shirley was born on April 19, 1930 in Ennis, Montana, the daughter of John Victor and Gladys (McClosky) Beart. She went to grade school and part of high school in Mc- Minnville. Then the family moved to Rock Creek and she finished high school at Baker High School. In February of 1958 she mar- ried Denver Taylor. Mrs. Taylor worked for a long time in Wilcress Acres a nursery out of Tualatin before moving to Cove in the late 80s. Her husband preceded her in death on April 21, 1996. Shirley was a member of the Cove Sportsman’s Club. She loved to go for rides in the mountains, drives out of town and especially being a grand- mother. Survivors include her children, Doug and Debra , Chris and Candi, of Cove, Sue Taylor of Kent, WA, Mike and Beth of New- berg, Sheri and Jimmy Worthy of Chandler, OK; sister, Lois St Aubin of Tucsan, AZ; 10 grandchil- dren; 12 great grandchil- dren; other relatives and friends. Condolences may be made online at www.dan- ielsknopp.com. Leland U. Fortner Kennewick, WA, 1929-2015 Mr. Leland U. Fort- ner, 86, of Kennewick, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5th, with loving family members by his side. Lee was born on January 20, 1929 in Lakev- iew, Oregon to Philip and Gertrude Fortner, the second of three sons. He grew up in Baker City, OR, BHS Class of 1947, and attended college at Oregon State University, attaining his bachelor’s degree. He then served as a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps for two years, serving a tour of duty in Korea in 1952. Returning home, he met and married his bride of 62 years, Diona “Dee” Baum, of Baker City. Over the next five years they had 3 children, Raymond, Doug- las, and Roxane. Lee obtained his Mas- ter’s degree from OSU in 1955, and returned to work for his father in Baker City for a short time, before accepting a position with Seattle First National Bank in 1958, where he began a 27 year career in banking, taking him and his family through various positions of increasing responsibil- ity in Seattle, Yakima, Mt. Vernon, Yakima again, and finally to Pasco in 1974. He retired in 1985 as a Regional Vice President of SeaFirst based in Pasco. During his career he was active in many community affairs, as a member of the Rotary Club, and Kiwanis Club, and served a term on the school board in Mt. Vernon, Washington. SEE OBITUARIES PAGE 10
