She was born on August 17, 1926 in Baker, Oregon to John B. and Margaret William. Most of her early childhood was spent in lumber camps around Bates, Austin and Whitney. Her father worked for the Oregon Lumber Company. The family lived year round in camp till her brother John started to school. Then they came to Baker where they lived on 15th Street. She and John went to Churchill School through the 6th grade except for the 4th grade when they went to school in a one room schoolhouse in Whitney. She remembers this year as the best time of all her happy childhood. Her father came home every night and they were all together. Probably the most important people in her life as a child were her Brothers; John was 16 months older than she and was the fount of all her knowledge. Berley was 21 years older and she adored him. When they came to Baker from camp, he took her on his knee and they coagulated paint charts and she was allowed to choose the color he would paint the equator that week. She took this responsibility very seriously. The equa- tor had to be painted often because “it is hot.” Mary went to Helen M. Stark Junior High School and graduated from Baker High in 1944. On Febru- ary 17, 1946 she mar- ried her childhood friend George L. Carroll. They were married in the old Christian Church on the corner of 4th and Church Street. They spent most of their early mar- ried life in Baker. George worked as a meat cutter. They had three sons and a daughter. In 1954 George re-enlisted in the Navy and the family moved around quite a lot. George left the service in 1961 and they settled in Esparto, California where they raised their family and lived for over 30 years. They returned home to Baker City in 1992. Mary enjoyed doing needlepoint and many a home has her work hung on the wall. She also knitted slippers and dish cloths, all year to give as Christmas gifts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, George who died in 2002, sons James, George Jr. and Robert. Mary is survived by her daughter Maggie and her husband Ken McGuire of Baker City; Delores Carroll of Vacaville, California; Grandchildren Kathleen and her husband Levi Schomberg, Robert Carroll, Laura Carroll all of Baker City; Kristen Glenn and husband Austin of Vacaville, California; Stephanie Slavich & mate David Sanders; Austin & Cassie Schomberg of Baker City; Great Grand’s Hilary Rose, Marissa, Emily, Kelsey, Jonathan, Jasmine, Jax, Kenyan & Brodee Schomberg all of Baker City, Angelina & Abel of Vacaville, Califor- nia, of Baker City; Nieces Joyce Rayborn and her husband Bruce; Roberta Peterson and her husband New from the author of "How to Heal a Broken Heart in 30 Days," as seen on The Today Show! “… an incredible, must-read book. Howard Bronson’s openness about his own relationships makes this book honest, insightful, educational and raw.” — Denise Brown, President and Co-Founder, Th e Nicole Brown Foundation Available everywhere! “Howard Bronson has done it again! Th is is a great guide for anyone whose marriage has hit a rough patch!” —Dr. Ben Michaelis Dennis, John Williams and his wife Rosa and their son J.R.; many wonder- ful friends - David Burris was like a son to her; good neighbors Bettie and Marvin Schmidt who did so many kind things for her through the years; Julie and her son Nick Bouchard who kept her lawn mowed, hedge trimmed, painted her kitchen and other things too numerous to mention; Bev Coleman with whom she enjoyed many a ham- burger, shared holidays and was a good friend; Sunny and Jack Lillard of Roseburg, Oregon who called her Aunt Mary and they had a longtime close and loving relationship. Last but not least her com- panion and much loved dog “Blossom Buttercup.” Judy Chamard and John Powell have welcomed Blossom Buttercup into their home. Mary was at peace with this kind gesture. She also leaves numerous nieces, neph- ews, cousins and extended family. There will be a Memo- rial Service at Mt. Hope Cemetery at a later date for family and friends. Date and time will be announced. Julie made a beautiful box at Mary’s request for her cremains - it was much admired and appreciated. One thing that Mary always said and was “I have to live with myself, and so I have to be nice for myself to know.” A huge thank you to Heart & home Hospice especially Seth, Erica, Ben & Lettye. God bless you all for your kindness & compassion For those who would like to send condolences or make a memorial dona- tion in memory of Mary may do so to an Animal Shelter of your choice through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home & Crema- tion Services PO Box 543 Halfway, Oregon 97834.
