Patty was born February 28, 1921 in Illinois, the daughter of Ila (Stauffer) Gelo and Anthony Gelo. She was raised with her brother F.B. Clarke in Ben- ton, Illinois. Patty married Thomas C. Hunter on December 24, 1940. They celebrated nearly 68 years of marriage and had one son, Francis Clark Hunter. Patty worked as a secretary and stenographer in the mayor’s offi ce and also for many years at the Benton School District. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Benton. After her husband’s death, she remained in Benton for several years, later mov- ing to Baker City 2012 to be closer to her extended family in Oregon. She was a kind and generous spirit, and we are grateful for the time we had with her. Patty Hunter is survived by her son Clark Hunter (Eve), grandson Lucas Hunter (Chantelle), and great grandson Travis, all from Toronto, Canada and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Tommy, brother F.B. Clarke, sister-in-law Zona Clarke, brother John A. Clark and sister-in-law Ella Mae Clark. The family would like to thank the staff at Mead- owbrook Place for their loving care and support. Woman charged with assault on 8-month-old baby On June 29, 2015, Kira Vansickle of 2492 Carter St., Baker City, Oregon, (dob 11/17/89) was ar- raigned in Baker County Circuit Court on one count of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree. Vansickle is charged with crimes relating to causing abusive head trauma to an 8-month-old infant who was in her care. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in Sep- tember of 2014. The Baker County Ma- jor Crime Team has been investigating the case. The victim was life fl ighted to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital on September 20, 2014, and had suffered severe head injuries. The injuries to the child will likely result in lifelong permanent impairment. Bail was set at $115,000. Kidnapped woman saved by 911 call in northeast Oregon On June 27, 2015 at about 6:12 a.m., the Morrow County Sheriff's Offi ce received a 911 call from a female who advised she had been kidnapped and was trapped in a car traveling on I-84. Members from the Morrow County Sheriff's Offi ce, Gilliam County Sheriff's Offi ce and Ore- gon State Police responded and located the vehicle on I-84 traveling westbound near milepost 143 (east of Arlington). Law enforcement stopped the vehicle and the driver was identifi ed as William T Cooter II, age 42, of Greeneville, TN. The female was located inside the vehicle and iden- tifi ed as the person who called 911. A roadside investigation revealed Cooter had as- saulted and held his female passenger against her will. The Fourth of July is fast approaching and the Baker County Sheriff’s Offi ce would like to remind visitors as well as residents to drive responsibly this holiday weekend. The Baker County Sheriff’s Offi ce will be increasing patrols during this busy time in an effort to prevent and arrest alcohol as well as drug impaired drivers who endanger not only themselves but all others who share the road. The Sheriff’s Offi ce would like to specifi cally remind citizens that though marijuana use is now legal in our state, it is still a crime to drive while under the infl uence and doing so can result in a DUII arrest. Our wish is for all to enjoy the holiday weekend but we ask that people who consume alcohol or marijuana do so respon- sibly and protect themselves and others by not operating motor vehicles. Further learned was Cooter and the victim did not know each other prior to the incident. Several Baker City residents said they believe they saw Cooter in town the day prior looking for employment. Cooter was arrested and was lodged at the Northern Oregon Regional Cor- rectional Facility in The Dalles on the following charges: Kidnapping 1st Degree, Rape 1st Degree, Sex Abuse 1st Degree, Sodomy 1st Degree, As- sault IV, Coercion, Menac- ing, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Unauthor- ized Entry into a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, False Infor- mation to a Police Offi cer, Possession of Metham- phetamine, and Interfering with Making a Report.
