Patricia Cartmell, 60, of Baker City, died on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. Arrangements are un- der the direction of Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home & Cremation Services. — Obituaries — LeRoy Walter Grover Baker City, 1928-2015 LeRoy Walter Grover, 86, of Baker City, died on April 10, 2015. A memo- rial service will be held at St. Francis de Sales Cathe- dral at a later date. LeRoy was born October 16, 1928 in Englewood, New Jersey to Samuel LeRoy and Caroline LeRoy Louise Grover (Roesler) Grover. He attended Sewanhaka High School where he obtained his GED and then studied electrical engineering at Ohio University for a year and a half. LeRoy spent two years serving in the U.S. Army and left the service as a PFC (T). He married Sandra Lou Stevens in Babylon, New York on May 14, 1955. LeRoy and Sandra had seven children—four sons and three daughters. LeRoy was self em- ployed working as a software engineer and retired after 32 years. He enjoyed photography, sail- ing, camping and fishing. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Knights of Co- lumbus, Data Processing Management Association, and Who’s Who in Data Processing. LeRoy is survived by his wife, Sandra of Baker City, sons: David Grover and Jim Grover both from Baker City, OR, Bob Gro- ver of White City, OR, and Joe Grover of Ben Lo- mond, CA; daughters: Mary Lou Maher, of Antioch, CA, Caroline Naito of Half Moon Bay, CA and Michele O’Hara of San Jose, CA; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Caro- line Grover. Jean Bennett Medical Sprngs, 1922-2015 LeRoy Walte Jean (Gaddy) Bennett, 92, of Medical Springs, died April 16, 2015 while being cared for by her family in Nampa, Idaho. A visitation was held Monday, April 20th from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. Her funeral service was held the following day, Tuesday, April 21st at 1:00 p.m. at the First Jean Church of the Nazarene Bennett with Pastor Lennie Spooner Offic - ating. A private family interment followed at the Pioneer Cemetery at the Park near Medical Springs. Jean was born June 24, 1922 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was the oldest of four siblings, Marie Weeks, Dorothy Soulsby, Dale Johnson and Lester Gaddy, all who have passed on. Jean and Robert Bennett were married on December 21, 1942 and would have been married 73 years next December. Soon after their marriage, Robert joined the Marine Corps and served as a radio operator with the 1st Marine Air Wing in the South Pacific during World War II. Jean and Robert made their home in Eugene, OR until 1983 when they acquired the Pondosa store near Medical Springs. They have five children, Barbara Ekstrand of Med- ford, OR. Patricia Taylor of Elgin, OR. Larry Ben- nett of Eagle Point, OR. Lori Brock of Nampa, ID and Robert Todd Bennett of Boise, ID. Together they have 20 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and seven great-great grand- children. Jean was a great inspi- ration to all who entered the store at Pondosa, both emotionally and spiritu- ally. She helped Robert stop smoking in the 1970s and claimed that was the reason he was able and healthy all the years they were together. Since then, she wouldn’t let up on anyone until they also quit. She loved to visit with strangers or neighbors who came in the store and would invite anyone inter- ested to join the local bible study group. Jean and Robert were members of the First Church of the Nazarene in Baker City since the 1980s. Jean was loved and admired by anyone who met her and was always thinking of others more than herself. She is well loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Pio- neer Cemetery at the Park through Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Baker City, OR. 97814 Roland Scott Bannister Baker City, 1941-2015 Roland “Scott” Ban- nister, 73, of Baker City died April 16, 2015 at Ashley Scott Manor Care Bannister Center in Baker City. A visitation was Thursday, April 23rd from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. His funeral will be held Friday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Baker City. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall, and his interment, with military honors, will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Athena Cemetery in Athena, OR. Roland “Scott” Ban- nister was born in Walla Walla, WA on November 11, 1941 to Lee Robert Bannister and Lenore (Graham) Bannister. Scott was the youngest in the family with two loving older sisters. He at- tended elementary school in Weston, OR graduating from Weston High in 1959. He briefly attende Eastern Oregon University and then transferred to the University of Oregon receiving a Bachelor’s de- gree in 1963. Upon gradu- ation he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served more than five years, a - taining the rank of Captain. After returning from military service he at- tended the University of Oregon receiving a Mas- ter’s Degree in Industrial Labor Relations. He began work at the Union Pacific Railroad as a management trainee after graduation and spent twenty eight years at the railroad in a variety of Human Re- source positions, including the recruiting and hiring of management and union personnel, directing the compensation and benefits administration for manage- ment personnel. He was also respon- sible for developing and managed the first Fitness Facility for the railroad. The concept of physical fitness was right down his alley and soon there were such facilities across the railroad. He was an avid runner, skier, hiker and climber spending many enjoyable hours in the mountains of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. He was pretty sure he had climbed all the trails in the Wallowas He also was an avid runner (run- ning two marathons) and bicyclist and participated in more than one Cycle Or- egon and Bike Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN). Scott met his wife Sharon while working at Union Pacific and they married in 1994. She brought two children to the marriage. Scott was a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters and es- pecially enjoyed teaching one the words to “Minnie the Mermaid.” They loved their Grandpa Scott in return. When they retired, they moved to Baker City building a home on Pine Creek Lane where he spent many hours enjoying the view of the Wallowa and Elkhorn mountain ranges from his deck. He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church and the Republican Party where he served in a number of leadership positions for both organizations. Scott always had a smile and had a wonderful sense of humor. While at work, he was known for his wicked pranks. He was always the first to volu - teer if a job needed to be done, and it had to be done right—nothing sloppy was going to get past him. Scott is survived by his wife Sharon, stepdaughter Cindy Teller of Council Bluffs, Iowa, stepson Brian (Brenda) Teller, Louisville, Nebraska and granddaughters Hailey and Paige Teller. He is also sur- vived by sisters Kathleen (Charles) McCullough, Weston, OR and Yvonne (Russell) Graham, Salem, Oregon, two nephews Tyler Graham (Bend, OR), and Derek Graham (Seattle, WA), five nieces Telara McCullough (Mil- ton-Freewater, OR), Kim Fischer (Wenatchee, WA), Sallye McCullough (Walla Walla, WA), Molly Gra- ham (Bellevue, WA) and Lee Glendenning (Belling- ham, WA).
