Varsity Hoopsters Down Comets, Lose To Tornado The Ashland varsity basket ball squad clobbered the Crater Comets 4627 and dropped a 50-42 thriller to Medford's Black Tornados, to bring their season's record to 8 win and 6 losses. Kerry Linley's 16-point effort and Randy Nelson's 12 points led the Bears on to their vic tory . The Bruins are .500 at the charity line with 14-14, while the Comets are 15 5. The Bears led in buckets dumped with .372 as they hit 1&43, while the defense held the Crater squad to .120 with &50. It was again Nelson who led the Bruins, this time against Medford with 18 points, while Ski Club Makes Plant For Group Instruction The Ski Club of Ashland High has made plans to take ski les sons at Mt. Ashland soon. The lessons will be paid for from the Club treasury. The money was raised by various projects. The members will take lessons according to their ability. PmCtfCim C7 An accordion artist, Mr. Don Comfort, was featured at a na tional School Assembly on Feb. 7. Featured in the assembly was an electric accordion which is the only such instrument of its type in the United States. The accordion was made by hand in Italy and uses a 10-speaker Magnatone Amplifier manufac tured in Los Angeles. The pro gram featured selections rang ing from classical to popular music. Mr. Comfort began studying the accordion at the age of eight He holds an Associate of Arts Degree in music and did fur ther study at the University of Redlands in California. Much of his serious training and study of the classics was with Anthony Galla-Rini, world famous con cert accordion artist Mr. Comfort has appeared on the NBC television network sev eral times and for the past 15 years has performed for more than 10 million stt dents. Jack Snook took Crater's high scoring with 11 points. The sophs will meet the Kla math Falls Pelicans here to night. JV's Lose Two The JV basketball squad lost two games. A 53-48 decision to Crater, and 74-44 decision to Grants Pass. John Mitchell led the hoop sters in both games with 19 and 12 points respectively. Against Crater, Scot Weaver was second with 10, Calhoun 7, Slack and Carter 4 each, and Tim Richards 3. Calhoun was second in scoring against the Cavemen with 7, Weaver 6, and Carter and Mat teson had 5 each. Mike Brandt and Ken Hast ing paced the Cavemen with 13 points each. MHS Gymnasts Down AHS Girls The Ashland Tumbling Team was defeated by Medford as the Tornadoes scraped by in a 56 49 victory. Thougn the Griz zlies were defeated they were able to give the more experienc ed Medford girls a close excit ing match. Placing for Ashland was: Floor Exercise: Maria Ander son, 1st; Sharron Powers, 3rd; Enid Langer, 4th. Uneven Parallel Bars: Maria Anderson 1st; Kelly Reed 4th; Sandy Wolfe 5th. Balance Beam: Maria Ander son 1st; Enid Langer and Sheryi Mitchell tied 5th. Vaulting: Maria Anderson 1st; Sandy Wolfe 3rd. Tumbling: Terry Rickert 2nd; Janell Bennet 3rd; Kelly Reed 5th. Tarmpoline: Kelly Reed 2nd; Sharron Powers 3rd; Judi Nid ever 5th. Ashland's Maria Anderson was named all around gymnist when she outscored all other individ uals (this includes Medford) at the match. In four Olympic e vents Maria scored 16 points. AHS Grapplers To Host Comets The Ashland High School mat men will play host to the Crater Comets matmen next Thursday night at 6:30 in the AHS gym nasium. Having already met the Com ets wrestlers once this season and defeating them, 25-22, coach Kieth Mobley believes his squad has a good chance for another victory, "however it will be a close match either way." Ashland's WTestling season consists of: one tournament win, a second place in the Eagle Point Tournament, one match win against Crater, and five match losses. The Comets tamed Ashland on Friday night 50-45 as the previously unwinning quintet capitalized on their foul shoot ing and Ashland misques. The Grants Pass Cavemen, on the other hand, fought back in the closing minutes of the game to overcome Ashland on Satur day night in the Climate City by the tune of 6&63. The Cavemen, who had been beaten the night before by Kla math Falls, handed Ashland it's seventh loss inl 0 decisions. GP is 7-3 in season Conference ac tion. In the Crater contest, the Comets netted 24 of 37 free throw tries while Ashland hit a meager seven of 25. The Grizzlies, who were be hind most of the time after the GRA Netters Stun Rogue River Girls The Girl's Recreation Assoc iation Basketball team stunned the Rogue River Chieften in a 41-3 victory Jan .31. The soph omore team wasn't far behind as they defeated Rogue River sophomores in a 14-0 victory during a short game. Lyla Voth led the upperclass team with 18 points. Nancy Phillips scored 13 with Cathy Phelps and Susan Riffe scoring 5 and 2 respectively. Scoring one apiece were Vicke Budden, Judy Jameson and Kathy Rob erts. Also playing on the team were Bernedette Hawk, Dana Weitman, and Diann Collver. Leading the sophomores in scoring were Susan Riffe and Carlista Holland with 4 points apiece. Donna Richardson and Judi Nidever scored two apiece with Cathy Roberts and Maria Anderson scoring 1 apiece. Also playing were Michele Roberts and Cyndi Lytle. Clark missed and Crater rebounded. It was all over for Ashland. The Bears had previously beaten Crater by 20 and 19 points respectively. Against Grants Pass, Ashland took over the lead a number of times, but with less than two minutes left in the contest and the score 51-50, GP took over the margin of victory perman ently. The Bruins were again beaten on free throws. Grants P.iss nabbed 36 attempts and put in 28 shots while Ashland connect ed on 13 of 20 shots. The Bears did, although, score 40 points from the field while the Cave men tallied only 14. High point men for each game were Joey Williamson and Tex Willis with eight each in Fri day's fray and Kerry Lindley and Willis with 14 points apiece against GP. Ashland's 16 point-per-game Randy Nelson was held to just 12 points during the two games. Tonight the Grizzlies meet Klamath Falls in a conference t counter at Ashland. There is no game Saturday night GRA Hosts BB Sportsday Feb. 5 Ashland High School's Girls Recreation Association hosted a basketball sportsday Feb. 5. The sportsday took place at the jun ior high. Attending the sportsday were Rogue River, Eagle Point, and Grants Pass. A "round-robin" of short games were played. The club is planning to at tend a basketball tournament at Southern Oregon College Febr uary 19. The tournament is be ing hosted by the Women's Recreation Association of South ern Oregon College. All the schools in the valley are in vited. The tournament was won last year by the Ashland team.
