School marks, in many cases, indicate the approximate grade at which you will leave school. Do you understand what your school grades are telling you every time you receive your report card? They are telling you how hard you work, how hard you will work, how far you go in school, whether or net you should go to college, whether or not your behaviour and other personal qualities will aid or hinder you in life, where your interests lie, and what type of life work you should choose. Regard them seriously! Your grades should be as high as the cor responding level of life you want to live and enjoy. If you want the best in life you must be among the best in school. You can learn as much as you desire in high school in four years, it is there for you. You can also learn as little as you want but don't expect big things later on. Remember, the responsibility is yours. STANLEY C. JOBE, Principal Join MARCH QF DIMES "Z l&memrjer Mi' 4 l 1 Lithia Way is the new name for the two-block dock. Joan Chase, Sue Deramo, stretch from Second Street to East Main. and Mary Ann Dawson. A council meeting Jan. 8 settled the name prob lem in which Lithia Way, C Street and Clarence Lane or C Lane were major choices. Businessmen of this two-block stretch petition ed for the name stating that it was both appropriate and valuable commercially. Arguments against renaming the street were that deeds had been issued under the name of C Street and, also, that renaming the street would cause business establishments expense in changing their letter-head addresses. Councilmen John Billings and Dr. Glenn Revel, along with many Ashland citizens, opposed the re naming of the street. One councilman, after a discus sion of the merits of the name, Lithia Way, stated that he thought Clarence Lane was as good a name as Lithia Way. Clarence Lane was suggested to honor Mr. Clar ence Lane, a prominent Ashland citizen, who wa3 born near Talent and has lived in Ashland since about 1878, when he was 8 years old. Mr. Lane has seen Ashland grow up, he recalls vividly the stage coach days, the arrival of the first train in Ashland, December 17, 1887, the old Ashland Woolen Mills, and many of the early develpoments of Ashland. Mr. Lane has owned confectionery stores in Ashland (including the one now owned bv Zupes). He has been a member of the Elks lodge for many years, and he once played an E-flat coronet in an Ashland band. Perhaps commercial and monetary reasons should be placed ahead of historical reasons for the naming of our city streets ; agreed, Lithia Way has historical background, too, but is it the historical background or the possible money-making values of the name which caused the Council to choose it?
