APRIL 18. 1952 ROGUE NEWS PACE THREE V fervor 1 BEAR FACTS Spring sports are well under way with tenms, track and base- ! ball sharing the spotlight. ; This is the first year for ten nis as a major sport, and there is much enthusiasm among the students. There have been two matches so far. The first was over at Grants Pass with the Bears losing 6-1. The second match was closer, with Ashland losing to Medford 4-2. Merle Deets won the only match from Grants Pass, while Bob Kramer and Dale Campbell won from Medford. Kramer and Campbell also tied the Medford doubles team. The baseball team is also im proving, having skunked Rogue River 7-3. Hayward Relays are on top for the track team this Satur day. April 19. Coach Mel John son reports that Crater is load ed and will be the team to beat. . Ashland has a tradition of show ing up well at Hayward, and we are looking forward to good tidings when they return. Let's have our matches, meets and games. The weather will be clear. Warm and sunshine, the weather forecasts say. But guess what always Happens when it comes Saturday! The baseball and track fields are sloshing wet, and muddy. Tennis courts are swimming pools, and the weather's strictly "Muddy." It rained last night, today it's freezing. All week was fine, but now the cold s increasing. Don't be surprised if someday you may hear The weather man has disap peared for predicting, "To morrow t'will be clear!" Winton Miller PROVOST FURNITURE Guaranteed "PAIRING v- Tennis Players' Tried by Various Troubles Ah, summer is well on its way now, and with it the urge to get the old tennis racket down and take out for the nearest tennis court comes back. You leave in plenty of time so that you will get there ahead of everybody else. But what's this? When you arrive you find that about a million other kids and I their dogs got there first, so you wait around a couple of hours to get the court. Grizzly Trackmen Take Third Place In the first track meet of the current season, a quadrangular meet- with Grants Pass, Crater High, Ashland, and Illinois Val ley, Ashland took third place with Crater High edging out sec ond place and Grants Pass first. In the field events Ashland tied for first in the high Jump and in the pole vault. The Bears also took a third in the pole vault. In the hundred yard dash the 1 Grizzlies took third place. Ash land also placed second in the 660. Although . Ashland Grizzlies did not make too good a showing in their first meet, the Grizzlies have good potentialities. They are especially pointing towards the Hayward Relays to be held April 18 and 19 In Eugene, where they hope to win another trophy. AHS Basebailers Bounced Twice , In the first two games of the season the Grizzly baseball club, although taking two sound lickings, has shown promise for the warm-weather sport of the season. After only three practices the Bears went to Grants Pass and were dumped 10-3 by the Cave men, who had already played a couple of ball games. A few days later they played Crater High and were trampled 13-4 The Eagle Point basebailers squeezed by the Grizzlies 9-8 in an extra inning game on the Pointers' field April 11. Minus ace outfielder Wayne Johnson. their hardest hitter, the Bears lacked the punch to grasp the game. Jim James led the Bears at the plate with 2 for 3, and Walt McCoy led 2 for 4 against three Eagle pitchers. - Used Cars Whittle Motor Co. You rally for a little while, and, just as you get ready to serve, some little children on roller skates invade the courts Now you have to play with them skating on the court, because they will take your balls or tell their mamas if you try to put them off by force. Then come the dogs, and they make off with a few of your Drize balls. Oh. well, who cares halls onlv cost about a buck i apiece. Despite all these difficulties your partner finally manages to deliver you a blazing fast ball and you lay into it with all your might. Boingg! ! Now no strings, and it costs $5 to get the racket restrung. By the time you get the money for new balls and re stringing the racket, autumn is here and there isn't any chance to play then because you have to go to school. GAA Holds Initiation The Girls' Athletic Associa tion held their initiation Thurs day, April 10, with a weiner roast and swimming party at Jackson Hot Springs. Afterward the new members were all brought back to town and let off in front of Selby's garage. From here they were sent on a scavenger hunt, to bring back such items as a policeman's sig nature and some popcorn from the Varsity. If you were downtown about 7:00 you must have seen Pauline Davis dressed in a 14-inch skirt and a baby bonnet; Sara Jami son in a gunny sack skirt; Pat Dean in her high heels and bob bie socks, and many other strangely dressed girls. The Pelicans from Klamath had 63 points and took six firsts; Crater had 44a4 points with five wins; and Ashland had 42'4 points with seven firsts. The complete results were: 880 yard relay Klamath.
