BEAR FACTS Baskitball season is well un der was and our first home garm- is coming up this Satur day, December 22. The Grizzlies have two games under their belts and should be sharp lor the Red Devils from CoquiUe. With a win from CoquiUe al ready, and a close one dropped to Crescent City, the Bears are primed to break into the win column again. It should be quite a battle as CoquiUe will un doubtcdly be out for revenge. The probabe starting lineup for Ashland this Saturday will be Merle Deets, Gregg Lininger, Mervin Taylor, Bill HoUings- worth, and Harvey Woods. Ashland Quintet i Trims Red Devils The Ashland Grizzlies basket ball team opened their season Friday, December 7. Playing their first game at CoquiUe, they ran over the Red Devils by a score of 41-28. Although they had only four reserves, the Grizzlies easily outran the opposing team. Be cause of the condition of the floor ttey were unable, how ever, to make their fast break work properly. Ashland took the lead during the first few minutes of play and the Red Devils followed in the dust, never coming closer than six points of tying the Grizzlies during the rest of the game. Merle Deets was high point man for Ashland, scoring twelve points. The starting line-up for Ash land was Hollingsworth, center: T. Tenney and Taylor, forwards-, Deets and Woods, guards. , Coach Jandreau emphasized that his opening fi We, is ery I flexible and is usually different for each game. . g . The Junior Bears are active, too, defeating Talent Jayvees 51 31. A practice game with O' Hara's service station gave them another one, 42 to 30. Members of the J. The Ashland coaches, led by manager Charley Jandreau, made it an exciting game as they were on the heels of the Clowns at all times. The score at the end of the third quarter was tied at 32-32, but the Haxlemites quickly ran up the final score. Exhibiting skill in passing. dribbling, and shooting, the Clowns tried all kinds of out landish tactics. Included were bouncing the baU off the floor into the hoop; shooting lay-ins between their legs: and rolling the ball through the whole Ash land team for a shot at the bas ket. Not content with playing on the floor, the Clowns stationed one of their players in the bal cony for a better shot. Then tir ing of basketball, they ran for a touchdown from midcourt out of a T formation. Proceeds from the game go for spring sports which include baseball, track and tennis. Didn't that make you feel good deep down inside when Mr. Arthur Straus of Central Point made a similar statement in the Monday assembly? But just how many of you know why Ashland was so hon ored? How did we happen to win the cup? Each school was furnished with many copies of a baUot put out by the Southern Oregon Principals and Coaches Associ ation. The Yell leaders, Student Councils, referees, and coaches all sent in their ballots and it was they, representing aU the schools in Southern Oregon that decided Ashland had the best sportsmanship. Some of the points considered by the yell leaders were cour tesy to opposing yell squad, ex- change yells, welcome yell, and j no booing. Student Council rated the schools on record as to vandal ism, no visits by opposing stu- WARRIORS EDGE GRIZZLIES, 55-52 dents at school on day of game, bonfire and noise parade unmo lested. The officials voted on the sportsmanship of the players, coaches, and fans; if dressing quarters were clean and ade quate, and if promptly paid. The coaches rated schools on dressing room conditions, pro per welcome and help, good sportsmanship of opposing coach and congratulations or condolences after game. Ashland won last year but let's not rest on our laurels. Let's show them that Ashland is still the best sport Led by center Lee Tcmplcton Noon Activities Draw Attention Intramural basketball has again started with this year's teams all very strong. Tc pick a champion would be very hard indeed. Although the names of these noon day teams may be a bit on the lighter side, the teams play in all seriousness. The games are played at noon, lasting for approximately 25 minutes. A quick rundown of the teams sees the soph boys, consisting of eight veteran ball with 28 points, the Crescent Players; "The Unbeaten Tromp- VOLLEYBALL, BOWLING ENJOYED BY GAA Ashland G.A.A. meets every Thursday night after school in the gym. For the first six weeks the girls played volleyball. Then a new sport was chosen for each six weeks. The girls are now bowling on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Recreation Center, under the instruction of Miss Dyer. Later on when they start on another sport, the girls who still wish to bowl will be able to on Tues days. Plans for initiation have not been completed yet, but it will probably take place sometime in January. FINEST GIFTS for Men From THE ROGUE SHOP City Warriors eked out a 55-52 win over the Grizzlies Satur day night, December 15. Templeton was the whole show, sinking shot after shot as the Warriors grabbed a first quarter lead and held it until the third quarter where they lost it momentarily only to re gain it for good. The Grizzlies, who were hot and cold, were led toy Bill Hol- lingsworth and Med Taylor with 15 and 12 points respectively. The Bear fast break was unable to work under lull steam as the California gym was a cracker box and much too small for an effective fast break. The starting line-up for the Bears was Gandee and Deets, guards; Taylor and T. Tenney, forwards: and HoUingsworth, center. ers, a senior group of fast and tireless players; the "Country Hicks," a group of fast boys that promise to be tough; the Cast- off Kids," a junior group that looks like the team to beat. And of course there's Mr. Parks' homeroom team of seniors that may prove to be champs. Of course there are other noontime activities, such as the tug-of-war between classes. The juniors defeated the sophomores 4 and then after a little trouble, it was decided to call it a tie. There was also the rope '. climbing contest with Wayne South, Ken Dailey, La Vern Hap- , tonsLall, David Herburger and !.. Martin Kasser competing. Dail ey and Herburger tied at six sec onds flat.
