Us? We’re trading Black Friday—and that umpteenth helping of stuffing—for pirates, Dutchmen and opera. You heard us. For the first installment of its new Opera vs. Cinema series, Opera Theater Oregon turns to a Douglas Fairbanks classic and a seminal Richard Wagner score for a memorable mashup evening. “7 Jje Black Pirate v s . The Flying Dutchman” sets the 1926 adventure film to improvised live accompaniment based on “Der fliegende Hol lander.” The result is a flashback to silent film of yore, one that ups the ante by rooting the night’s real-time soundtrack in operatic grandeur. Future evenings will pit “Aida vs. M etropolis" and “Dr. Jek yll a n d Mr. Hyde vs. Doctor Atomic.” But for now, we ll gladly leave the leftovers at home in favor of pirate-themed drink specials (the “Johnny Depp,” “Extra Special Booty” Ale), a costume contest and sea songs and shan ties sung by the OTO gang, led by artistic director Erica Melton and pianist Doug Schneider.
