The neigh borhood bistro will once again transform its parking lot into a bona fide beach party, complete with time-honored clambake fare, signature cocktails, music, drag and more, to raise funds for 2011 beneficiary MercyCorps NW. Nell owners Darren and Van Creely looked no further than their torsos for the theme o f this year’s event, which also coincides with the eatery’s third an niversary— both have traditional Sailor Jerry-style heart tattoos, with a flowing banner bearing each other’s name on their ribs. “Portland is certainly a tatted town,” says Van, who notes that temporary tattoos will be given out to attendees, should they be inkless. “We thought that [the] Sailor Jerry scene certainly went with the Clambake." A clambake is a generic term for a beach party, wherein folks layer a large pot o f vegetables with mussels, lobster, crawfish and yes, clams— douse it all in beer, and bury the pot in the ground over hot rocks. The coals heat up the pot, steaming everything to a nice, frothy finish. For Nell’s take on the event, parking lot-turns-seaside paradise with tiki- type flair. DJs 111 Camino and Trans Fat will supply the beats, while Sarah and the Sunset Sisters will whip up a set o f wild drag theater, and Snarky Cards’ Alisa Star makes her final Stumptown appearance before moving to Seattle.
