Anti-gay Assualt Leads
to Arrest in Downtown
Portland
Dillan Joseph Cashman was arrested July
25 and charged with intimidation in the
second degree and assault in the fourth de
gree following a reported anti-gay assault in
the 200 block o f SW Harrison Street at
Lovejoy Park.
Per a press release from the Portland Po
lice Bureau, officers arrived at 4:48 a.m. July
25 and spoke with 30-year-old Andrew
Dempsey-Gluth, who told police he was
walking through the park with another male,
their arms wrapped around each other as
they walked. He told officers they were ap
proached by two males, one o f whom was
Cashman, who began insulting them with
anti-gay slurs. Dempsey-Gluth. and his
friend left the area but later returned to re
spond to Cashman. Dempsey-Gluth saw
the suspect on a balcony next to the park,
and told the suspect that hi$ comments were
out o f line. That’s when Cashman left his
apartment, approached Dempsey-Gluth at
the park and assaulted him.
PPB Bias Crimes Detective Kevin War

Same-Sex Couples Living
in Oregon
The Williams Institute— a U C L A think
tank specializing in the field o f sexual orien
tation and gender identity-related issues in
law and public policy— released a snapshot
o f information August 4 culled from the
2010 U.S. Census containing data on num
bers o f same-sex couples and households
living in Oregon.
The release reported that there are 14,979
same-sex couples living in the entire state,
which translates to 9.9 same-sex couples per
1,000 households. Not surprisingly, Mult
nomah County and the City o f Portland
both ranked at the top o f Oregon’s regions
for same-sex couples and couples per 1,000
households. The county logged 5,897 same-
sex couples, with 19.36 per 1,000 house
holds, and Portland counted 5,446 same-sex
couples, with 21.91 per 1,000 households.
Lincoln County ranked the lowest o f the
counties that had 50 or more same-sex cou
ples, with 215.
The proportions o f same-sex couples by
sex and child-rearing was overwhelmingly
female, with 65 percent tallied; the number
o f same-sex couples raising children was
overwhelmingly low at 29 percent.
Hundreds o f people— LGBTQ_and allies
alike— took to the sidewalks of downtown
Portland late July 23 to protest recent anti
gay bias assaults and ask downtown busi
nesses to be a “safe space” for everyone.
The “We Are Not Afraid” march kicked
off after 11 p.m. and was organized by Jef
frey Carr and the recently founded Oregon
State Gay Pride Organization. Protestors
marched a loop that began and ended at C C For more information about the Williams
