The band was borne out of two very con nected things: “Pornography and the internet brought us together,” says Klaus of how he met Warner. “We both put pieces in the HUMP! festival in 2009,” explains Warner, referencing the lo cal amateur porn contest. Both men submitted videos to the competition, Klaus a live action and Warner an animation. “We ended up talk ing through Facebook,” Warner says. Klaus then recruited Jansen, with whom he’d collaborated on previous projects. O f Jansen, Klaus says, “H e’s a gorgeous straight boy who plays a pink guitar.” The band held a CD release party last No vember at Crush for their first EP, the seven- track Our Heroes Bleed Glitter. More than 100 people showed up to the event, which led to a creative residency at Crush. Mattachine Social play Portland Pride 2011 at 12:35p.m. Saturday, June 18. The Public Songs, Private Parts of Delaney and Paris Keep an ear out for Delaney and Paris— they might just knock your socks off. W ith song titles like “Hipster Douchebag,” “Stop Staring at my Tits” and “Herpes,” the female duo is rocking the acoustic scene. Think of them as Jewel with five shots of liquid anger, or a version of the Indigo Girls if they had starred in Kill Bill, or Ani DiFranco if she were raised by Marilyn Manson. Delaney and Paris are Delaney Aileen Smith, 21, and Paris Hoover, 23. The two met in a group vocal class at Portland Community Col lege. “Paris had lyrics to a song and Delaney volunteered to write music to it,” Smith says. They’ve played at venues such as Dante’s, Swift Lounge and Scandals, to name a few. The duo cite Stephen Lynch as “one of the first performers we both really fell in love with,” along with Kimya Dawson, Hoover adds, “and we fucking love Storm Large.” To the band, among the featured talent at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, “Pride is about rejecting that idea that there’s a right or wrong way to be ‘normal,’ embracing the strange and promoting acceptance,” Hoover says. “That’s what we would like our music to do as well, even if it is in our tongue-in-cheek kind of way.” W hen asked why their songs take such public stances on private matters, Delaney and Paris are clear. “We feel as if it is breaking down boundaries by making ugly or inappropriate things beauti ful, and promoting social change by making these things okay to talk about,” Smith says. Hoover adds, “Sometimes people need to be forced out of their comfort zones to grow as a person. We want to challenge gender roles and the stereotype that girls need to be pretty and nice to everyone, and not use foul lan guage and not talk about or enjoy sex.” Delaney and Paris perform on the Portland Pride main stage at 2:35p.m. Sunday, June 19.
