Dino Fever Blue Cranes get new and really, really, really old for Filmusik presentation Dinosaurs, dude. It doesn’t get any cooler. Ever since the ancient creatures ruled the earth, all those who followed have been fascinated by their stature, their strength and their survival—or lack thereof. And ever since thereVe been flickering images on the silver screen, we’ve been awestruck by their, well, sheer coolness. For their latest presentation, the folks at Filmusik assemble a team of musicians, sound effects designers and actors to create the soundtrack of a classic creature feature, 1978’s Planet of Dinosaurs. That’s right, dino disciples: Every roar, every THWAP! of the sci-fi flick’s stop- motion stars will be recreated in person, direct from the Hollywood Theatre pit, thanks to Filmusik’s talented artists and an arsenal of noise props. Local voice-over actors will dub the film live from the original script, matching the movie’s time travelers who land on a prehistoric planet. And furnishing the (original!) musical soundtrack are Portland’s improv renegades, Blue Cranes. As you’d imagine, meshing the film’s separate sight and sound can vases is tricky business. Explains Foley and sound effect guru David Ian, “The pacing of the film is much, much faster than radio theater and many sounds, while important, are often incidental instead of featured; there’s a huge variety as well as calling for huge sounds from giant fight ing monsters.” He had us at “huge sounds from giant fighting monsters.” Get ready for a truly thrilling, behind-the-scenes look at the art of sound on screen. June 17, 23 (Spanish language performance) and 24, 8 p.m.; Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd.; $10, $8 students/seniors; hollywoodtheatre. org orfilmusik.com. — A m a n d a S c h u r r
