% just out beartownweekend.com Welcome to BearTown 16 If you live in Portland, you know three things about the city. The men are hot, masculine, lumberjack type bears who know how to have a good time. Everyone seems to be laid back, patient, and friendly. There seem to be bridges everywhere! Portland is known locally as Bridgetown because of its many historic bridges. It has more bridges than Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles combined. There are more bridges here than in San Francisco, New Orleans, or our neighbor Seattle Each bridge is a welcome portal for bears, cubs, otters, and all other forms of wildlife from around the world to the 16th year of Beartown weekend. Let loose and join us for a weekend party you'll never forget. There are many activities this year, from the tamest to some of the more adventurous, there are activities for everyone A highlight will be the Mr. Oregon Bear and Mr. Oregon Cub Contest. And that's just a start. What is BEARTOWN? beartownweekend.com BearTown is an annual weekend bear run organized and held by Oregon Bears, Inc. This event began in 1996 as"Beards and Roses" when the very first Mr. Oregon Bear contest was held. In 2002, to avoid confusion with the annual Portland Rose Festival and to be more inclusive, the event's name, "Beards and Roses," was officially changed to "BeorTown." A new theme is introduced every year giving each year's BearTown event a unique character. Our HISTORY o re g o n b e a rs .o rg The Oregon Bears is a fraternal, social and service organization committed to organizing events and activities that provide for the social enjoyment and camaraderie of its members, as well as providing resources (financial and otherwise) to selected charitable organizations. Though the Bear Movement is primarily based on an easy going and natural definition of gay masculinity, The Oregon Bears has always been inclusive and welcomes individuals from all walks of life. Founded in November 1995 with just 13 members, it has now grown to over 500 members and is one of the largest Bear clubs in the nation. President's MESSAGE This year the Beartown committee chose The Sexual & Gender Minority Youth Resource Center as beneficiary of the funds raised from our Beartown events. SMYRC provides a safe, supervised, harassment-free, and alcohol- and drug-free space for sexual minority youth 23 and younger. Youth gather to participate in positive activities like art, music, community organizing, youth development, education, peer support, support groups, case management, counseling, and job readiness preparation. Watch for opportunities throughout the weekend to help us raise funds for this fine organization: Sunday Bingo with the Sisters, raffle ticket sales, direct donations, silent auction, a massage therapist, the Bear Market, and many more events contribute directly to SMYRC and its work.
