Planet Janis World-premiere production resurrects Joplin for One Night only W hen it comes to female rock icons— hell, icons of any gender, any musical genre—they don’t get more singular than Janis Joplin. TTie bluesy, bawdy force behind “Piece of My Heart,’’“Me and Bobby McGee”and “Mercedes Benz,"who fatally overdosed in 1970 at the age o f 27, influenced everyone from Stevie Nicks to Pink. Her style, swagger and soulful vulnerability were one-of-a-kind. Now a world-premiere musical promises to resurrect Joplin’s oeuvre in all of its raw power. One Night with Janis Joplin, presented by Portland Center Stage in association with the legend’s estate and Jeffrey Jampol (JAM, Inc.), features more than 20 cuts culled from Joplin’s influences, recordings and performanc es— including an in-progress song she never got a chance to record, “I’m Gonna Rock My Way to Heaven.” Cat Stephani takes on the titular role, with Sabrina Elayne Carten as “The Blues Singer” and a backing band o f local musicians including Stephen Flakus, Mitch Wilson, Ross Seligman and Anton Van Oosbree. And for those who want to join the Joplin fold, a four-hour master class at 2 p.m. June 4 will help fans “Unleash Your Janice.” (The $100 tuition includes a ticket to the show.) Conceived of, written and directed by Randy Johnson, who previously helmed Elvis the Concert and served as the original producer o f Always Patsy Cline, Joplin is in good hands— audiences, too.
