The stage adaptation o f the hit 2000 film— a 2009 winner o f 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical— arrives in Portland April 5 for a two-week run at the Keller. A rotating handful o f young lads (including Lex Ishimoto, Giuseppe Bausilo, Kylend Hetherinton and Daniel Russell) step, kick, tap and twirl in the role o f the titular 11-year-old, who trades boxing for ballet at the encouragement o f his brassy teacher Mrs. Wilkinson (Broadway dame Faith Prince, scenery chewing with charm)— and despite the disapproval o f his recently widowed father and brother. Flanking breathtaking dance sequences that place the characters both firmly on the ground and soaring through the air is the drama o f the 1984 British National Union of Mineworkcrs strike— during which workers walked out to save the industry from the threatened closures o f then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And yes, “M aggie Thatcher” gets a spirited shout-out (sing-out?) during the musical, which, it should be not ed, doesn’t skimp on the adult language. Lee Hall adapted his Oscar-nominated screenplay for the stage, with music provided by none other than Elton John.
