As a culture teem ing with artistic fortitude, creativity and tradition, it’s a bit o f a bizarre coincidence that the Portland Japanese Garden is scheduled to showcase an array of ohara ikebana—the art of floral arrangement evolved from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers to the spirits o f the dead. This tribute to a centuries-old Japanese art, it seems, is bittersweet in light o f the tragedy in the Far East. Members o f the Portland Chapter of the Ohara School of Ikebana combine the asymmetrical, empty-space aesthetic of traditional ikebana with the progressive moribana approach. M oribana breaks from the formal vertical style of ikebana of the past to create horizontal landscape arrangements, with flowers “heaped” (moru) in lower, plate-like containers, which likewise mirror a great transition in Japan. Color harmony, linear perfection, space and form are all crucial to the quality of each configuration. The Ohara School encompasses chapters in more than 20 countries and in 14 states nationwide, teaching students the nuances needed to craft these oft- times breathtaking floral arrangements. To serve the community, the Portland Japanese Garden has also erected a “W ish Arbor” for people to visit, pray and reflect. Visitors are encouraged to write wishes and condolences for victims of the disasters and tie them to the memorial.
