Honoring Stravinsky

From 1909 to 1929, Sergei Diaghilev
and his company, Ballet Russes, changed
the way the world thought of ballet.
Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and
Igor Stravinsky composed the ballets’
scores; Coco Chanel, Pablo Picasso
and Henri Matisse contributed design
elements.
Such powerful collaborations in
spired Christopher Stowell, Oregon
Ballet Theatre’s artistic director, who
says, “One of my goals since I came here
[to OBT] was to emulate, to a certain
degree, the Ballet Russes... It was such a
fertile time for creating interesting art.”
Although much of the choreography
created for Ballet Russes has been lost,

made a point of working with these fa
mous scores to “create 21st century
productions that speak to audiences
now,” including his own version of The
Rite o f Spring, which OBT premiered
two years ago.
From February 26 through March 5,
OBT will again perform Stowell’s Rite
of Spring, along with Stravinsky’s Fire
bird, recreated for OBT by San Fran
cisco Ballet’s Yuri Possokhov, as part of
its winter program—dubbed The Stra
vinsky Project.
Stowell wanted the program to also
include a new work set to Stravinsky’s
music, so he invited four local choreog
raphers to collaborate: OBT dancer
