O REG O N S LE S B IAN/GAY/B l/T RAN S/Q U E E R NEWSMAGAZINE JANUARY 7 ZOU 3 PAGE 3 by M art/ Davis just out Kudos to Kendall VOL. 28. NO. 2 Congratulations arc in order for Q Center’s Clawson ver the last few years, I have developed the hahit of writing this column later and later and later as we approach publish ing deadline. In today’s world of Facebook, Twitter and good old-fashioned gossip and rumor, I’d be quickly left behind if not rush ing to bring you the latest news the soonest as possible. 1 live in a world where I often find myself side-by-side with self-titled gadfly Byron Beck, simultaneously flashing our cameras in the direction of a drag queen, politician or local business celebrity, then rushing oft to be first to post and share the story. It’s 2011 now—that means be fast, he first and for gawd’s sake be right. Never though, as I delayed writing this issue’s column, did I imagine that I’d be writing about Q_Center Executive Director Kendall Clawson leaving her position—her monarchy, if you will—to take a position with soon-to-be Gov. John Kitzhaber as Di rector of Executive Appointments. (Details on the new job can be found on p. 6.) What that new title means is that Kendall will seek out the finest of the finest from all across the state to fill the many boards and commis sions that help the executive branch manage the state and her resources. Kendall, with her personal charisma and dynamic leadership style, is indeed an ideal fit for this position. And, as they say, every job in Salem is simply the first step to the next rise up the ladder. I doubt much that we’ll he losing Kendall in the dark shadows of Salem hallways. Kendall admits that leaving the Q_Center wasn’t an easy choice, yet in the final analysis it was the best decision for her—and ultimately for us as the LGBTQ_community. As Cory Murphy of Pride Northwest noted, “Kendall deserves this, but all of the LGBTQ_com munity will benefit because Kendall will be on the forefront of making sure every board and commission will represent the views of women, people of color, differently-abled, low- and middle-income folks as well as the LGBTQ_community. Kitz has really fulfilled a pledge here to our community.” Kendall is leaving Q_ Center, but not Portland and not her community of friends and colleagues. While there can be a tiny tendency to feel a sense of loss and sadness O over the vision of a Kendall-less Q_Center, I lowered our publishing schedule to one it’s also important to support Kendall in her issue per month for the first quarter.
