Wendy Peterman and Curtis Walker, the
creative minds and bodies behind Portland-
based Impetus Arts, are beginning work on a
performance focused on gender, sexuality and
the body and are seeking dancers of all skill
levels and backgrounds to participate.
Impetus is also accepting proposals from
other choreographers for pieces exploring
these issues and will be creating additional
performances from improvisational exercises.
“We have had very insightful proposals
from others; many are about relationships
and how they affect our own perspectives of
ourselves,” Peterman explained. She already
has a piece in the works that explores “what it
means to stand out in a crowd, feel alienated
and come to a place of self-acceptance.”
For his part, Walker is developing a per
formance in which different bodies move in
and out o f stretchy clothing to symbolize the
transformative influence o f apparel o f gen
der. He added, “It is rare that performances
focused on sexuality are inclusive of disabled
people from the onset.”
Impetus will hold its first meeting for
the project Saturday, May 22 at Performance
Works Northwest (4625 SE 67th Ave.) from
1 to 4 p.m. All dancers who attend the initial
meeting will be guaranteed a spot in one o f the
performances.
Rehearsals will take place every Saturday
from May 22 to July 10. Prospective perform
ers must not miss more than one meeting and

Local Cher Fan Gets the
Harpo Hookup
As much as Facebook and text messag
ing may be the new wave in communication,
nothing beats an old-fashioned letter—or
two— to get the attention of dream-maker
Oprah Winfrey, as Portland massage therapist
Joshua Arceneaux, discovered last month.
The seed was planted with a letter detail
ing Arceneaux’s lifelong admiration o f the talk
show host that began in elementary school,
when he would run home from the bus to
join his parents in their daily 0/>ra^-watching
ritual.
W hen Arceneaux heard The Oprah Winfrey
Show was offering a “Harpo Hookup,” he knew
instantly which celebrity he wanted to meet.
While many a gay man can claim the iconic
entertainer Cher as an inspiration, Arceneaux’s
life is defined by his fandom, to the extent that
all his friends refer to him as “Cher”—that is,
when they aren’t calling him “Oprah.”
“Not a day goes by that I don’t incorporate a
little Cher in my life,” Arceneaux told Just Out.
“My iPhone always has Cher ready to go at any
moment, my DVD collection is stocked with
her concerts, and in the back of my closet I have
my Cher wigs and costumes for any moment
I’m asked to show up as Cher to a party.”
After Harpo received Arceneaux’s letter
describing his love for Cher, Oprah producers
worked with his partner Rob Cygan to begin
