-Thou Shalt Be Entertained Portland Idol deifies the city's best singers Right behind adultery and coveting a neighbors wife, idolatry is one o f the most enjoyable o f the Ten Commandments to break. After all, who doesn’t want to bow down before something lovely and powerful every so often? This summer, a new event series promises Portland a whole pantheon o f sirens to worship and golden stars to be dazzled by. Get reverent— check out Portland Idol at the Red Cap Garage, every Thursday through July 29. The contest, modeled after the wildly successful Fox television series, has been at tractin g attention since it— and the grand prizes up for grabs ($1,000, an all-expense paid trip for two to L.A ., professional photo shoot and voice lesson?)— was announced. Nearly one hundred potential con testants auditioned to be one o f the dozen honey-voiced competitors o f Portland Idol. “We feel that we have 12 amazing singers who are going to be able to represent themselves very strongly throughout the event,” pre senter Justin Buckles explains o f the candidates. One o f the select twelve, Jimmy Parchment, is equally en thused: “They’ve really gathered an impressive group o f singers,” he notes. T hat said, it’s the judges who need to be impressed.
